This seems bad.

The highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, which has caused the death of hundreds of millions of birds in the last five years around the world, is spreading across Antarctica, a pristine paradise for wildlife.

"One USDA bird flu scientist kept a job but had to say goodbye to ... colleagues. “We all work on high pathogenicity avian influenza—seems like an absolutely reckless time to fire qualified scientists...directly involved in monitoring and responding to this virus right now,” the scientist wrote."

One of the executive orders this week prevents federal agencies from communicating about health or science. This means that NIH researchers can't attend planned conferences. The CDC can't publish a scheduled report on avian flu. The FDA cannot communicate regarding in-process drug approvals.

Visited a special exhibition at the National Museum of Nature and Science (Tokyo), “Birds”. It’s the biggest avian exhibition ever in Japan, featuring the taxonomy and evolution of birds. I had never seen such a ton of stuffed avian specimens.

This is type of cool and quiet science that excites me. In 2023, #H5N1 hit California condors hard: >21 birds dead. Just ~560 remain globally. Researchers asked: could a poultry vaccine help? They ran a trial that might change wildlife conservation & save the species.🧪

Egg prices are directly linked to avian flu- H5N1- spreading on poultry farms with high lethality in chickens. If you want cheaper eggs, then deal with the disease. That requires science, public health & vet experts.

Our new Science paper shows how elevated body temperature can protect against severe influenza and that avian-origin viruses escape this defence.

This is likely one reason why bird flus and some pandemic influenzas can be so severe.🧵
