Sunscreen cooling jackets or sleeves are my go-to. I can wear Avobenzone about one day in three (more than that and I start getting red, itchy reactive spots). I don’t love polyester, but the jackets/sleeves are my exception. Plus, I don’t have to keep buying them. And they are cooling!

Weird fact I learned recently: sunscreen stains are actually rust. The avobenzone in chemical sunscreen reacts with iron particles in the water to form yellow or orange patches of oxidation that you can get rid of with rust remover. :O

After 27 years without a new filter, bemotrizinol sunscreen has arrived in America. Ultra Violette's Unblock Screen SPF 50 launched August 31, 2026, three months after FDA clearance. Here is what BEMT actually does, how it compares with avobenzone, who it suits, and which products come next.

The MAHA people make me stabby, but on one point, I sort of agree with them. Chemical sunscreens in this country are atrocious. Here's an example: avobenzone is one, and when it interacts with chlorine, like when you go swimming, it forms a carcinogen on your skin. Read your active ingredients! 1/

Avobenzone stains your clothes too!

Ya I mean compared to bog standard Canadian sunscreens!

We’ve got the ultra fluid formulation which is less greasy (like the European formula) but still stingy bc of the outdated chemicals that are also included.

FYI as an avid thrift store goer, chemical sunscreen (specifically avobenzone) can STAIN CLOTHES when they interact with iron in water, aka when you wash them. Guess who finally found out about that when I washed a pair of white cropped pants for the second time. ಠ︵ಠ #physicalsunscreensuperiority

Is Suncream really toxic?
Which is best? The debate around the toxicity of sunscreen is complex and often misunderstood. It stems from a mix of scientific studies, regulatory caution, misleading headlines, and growing concerns about both human health and environmental impacts. Here’s a clear breakdown of the main concerns and where the debate stands: 🔬 1. Chemical Absorption and Potential Hormone Disruption Toxicity of chemicals in suncreams Concern: Some ingredients in chemical sunscreens—like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, and homosalate—can be absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. Debate: Studies (including by the FDA) found that these ingredients can be absorbed at levels higher than previously thought.

Oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octinoxate — common sunscreen ingredients — are endocrine disruptors. The FDA flagged their absorption into the bloodstream. But sure, go off about TikTok.

Chemical sunscreens (oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate) absorb UV by triggering a chemical reaction on your skin. FDA studies found oxybenzone in the bloodstream after a single application at levels exceeding their safety threshold. These same filters are linked to hormone disruption and coral reef

Double tableau sur les filtres solaires. D'un côté leur efficacité et de l'autre leur dangerosité.

I'm so looking forward to new formulations coming out! I can't use avobenzone on my face, so I'm hopeful I might have some options other than mineral.

They are a little pricey, but I can't do chemical sunscreen on my face (avobenzone makes me rashy). If you can, there are likely nice more affordable water resistant options out there.

I am allergic to avobenzone, I'm VERY happy to read this development
The US just approved its 1st new sunscreen ingredient since 1999. Europe has used it since 1999. Bemotrizinol blocks both UVA & UVB rays, breaks down more slowly than existing chemical sunscreens, & is absorbed less into the bloodstream than those same sunscreens. buff.ly/xxBcsP9

4 things to know about the new sunscreen ingredient the FDA approved
The Food and Drug Administration approved a new sunscreen ingredient in the U.S. for the first time in 20 years. It's been used for decades in Europe and Asia.

Brothekanon:
20 years! I was using avobenzone when this was approved in Europe. But hey, at least now I can buy sunscreen that doesn't make my skin itch. Better late than never, right? Just don't make me wait another 20 for the next big thing.

The FDA approved bemotrizinol, a UVA/UVB filter used in Europe and Asia for decades. Dermatologists cheer because it is photo-stable, safer, and more effective than the outdated avobenzone currently dominating the U.S. market.

This weekend I added their HLA water gel sunscreen (spf50, Avobenzone 3%,
Homosalate 15%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 10%) with no reaction and it felt REALLY nice, but I know some people with rosacea react hard to HLA www.neutrogena.com/products/ski...
