AWENDAW — The U.S. Forest Service is conducting prescribed fires on consecutive days in Francis Marion National Forest, bringing smoke haze and a burning smell to parts of the Charleston region. The agency said it burned 279 acres of the forest between Willow Hall, Lethcoe and Ion Swamp roads Oct. 28 and is burning 286 acres of the forest near Lethcoe Road Oct. 29. The haze was visible, and the smell noticeable, in the far reaches of West Ashley and beyond both days. The U.S. Forest Service said the Oct. 28 fire would bring smoke to Awendaw and Huger, an unincorporated community in Berkeley County, while the Oct. 29 fire would bring smoke to areas around United Drive and Halfway Creek. “Prescribed fires are conducted only when weather, fuel conditions and air quality meet strict safety guidelines,” the agency said. “These planned burns help reduce overgrown vegetation and lower the risk of wildfires, protecting nearby communities, infrastructure and natural resources.”...

Planning staff told the joint workshop that single-family residential approvals have continued during the moratorium period and identified several active projects that could add roughly 174 homes in the next two years; staff recommended updating subdivision standards alongside zoning changes.
