Wrong. We do science in all sorts of domains that cannot be fully replicated via experiments. For example, we can develop climate models, prove them out using backcasting, then test their accuracy going forward. But we can't create a "test planet" with climate for an experiment. Models suffice.

it feels like people want to take a victory lap based on results-based backcasting. it's easy to say that people were wrong to be concerned about something that has low likelihood of succeeding _after_ the success has occurred!
