this is what many internal platform engineering teams sound like to their stakeholders: overinvestment in technical capabilities and scaling, underinvestment in usability and product management.

Most engineering leaders and founders come from a backend engineering background. But not everyone: Balint Orosz has always been a "design-first" engineer.

Balint is my brother, and we're opposites in how I've always felt more pull for the backend, and he's been always building intuitive UIs:

I’m fortunate to have a call with the Bluesky backend team for an hour a week, and I’m continually blown away at how good they are at engineering their systems, how thoughtful they are about protocol design, and how smoothly they’ve been handling a huge influx of new users. Seriously impressive

When you look at most CTOs and engineering executives at most tech companies: their engineering background is more often than not backend engineering.

Worth considering what this means esp if they lead a co where the main product *is* mobile, web - or to delight customers!

As an infra guy, I’m genuinely impressed with Bluesky’s ability to scale so rapidly. It speaks to the resiliency of the underlying design (and some good backend engineering practices)

Talking with an early-stage recruiter who work with most large VCs about what engineering hires they make:

50% backend (in popularity: TS, Python, Go, some Rust; but not strong pref)
25% fullstack (usually React+TS+RN)
10-15% AU/ML (backend generalists who know AI)
5% frontend

Amusing how this one line in the Apple App review guidelines causes so much grief (and engineering effort) for engineering teams.

It's the cause for feature flag hell, internally building backend-driven UI frameworks and so many other workarounds to revert bugs for users quickly

@clearsky.app has been down for most of the past week. Justin works on it himself.

He needs engineering help: Backend python, postgres, JS/react/UI skills

ping @thieflord.dev if you can help

Clearsky is 3rd party, but it provides essential services. For one, I can't do user moderation without it.

Here’s what Blacksky is, for nerds, but framed as a distributed engineering problem instead of “a ’decentralized’ social media app”.
Atproto for distributed systems engineers - AT Protocol
AT Protocol is the tech developed at Bluesky for open social networking. In this article we're going to explore atproto from the perspective of distributed backend engineering.

Welcome to vibe coding—aka, telling the AI, “build me a scalable backend for a fintech app,” and praying it doesn’t also invent a blockchain, a new currency, and accidentally launch an IPO.

We’ve gone from “learn to code” to “prompt and cross your fingers.”
Vibe Coding Is Coming for Engineering Jobs
Engineering was once the most stable and lucrative job in tech. Then AI learned to code.

To be frank it would be quite insane if discord's age verification provider (k-id) stored any of those images on their backend, from a moral standpoint as well as an engineering standpoint. But that isn't necessary for people's data to be compromised.

This article is another interesting way to look at it. We were trying to figure out how to build for high scales while being decentralized, and gradually just turned the data center inside-out: atproto.com/articles/atp...
