Despite being vastly outnumbered by bacteria, fungi in our microbiome still play a significant role in our health. In today’s episode, we learn about the “mycobiome.” Plus, turmoil at the NIH.

I feel like this plastic eating bacteria could go a long way towards solving our Rich People problem.
Supposedly they have engineered bacteria that can eat plastic. That would be the most damaging thing you could toss on that scarecrow facsimile of a human.

A bacteria called Vibrio Vulnificus is widespread in warm saltwaters like the Gulf Coast.

There has been a recent increase in cases of severe illness from this bacteria and we spotlight what you need to know.

Our commitment is to keep you informed so you can remain vigilant.

It's never not bonkers that human life expectancy was ~34 in 1870 and then* someone was like "maybe water should be clean" and someone else was like "let's…wash our hands?" and someone else was like "vaccines tho!" and someone else was like "uh, mold kills bacteria?" and now we mostly live past 70.

Dear Health Secretary RFK, Jr. :

Carry on. And remember to swallow a lot of the water. Also, no eye goggles or nose clips allowed.

Our sympathies in advance. 😏

Signed,

Part of petrichor, the delish earthy smell released when rain hits parched ground, is geosmin,a compound from soil bacteria-human👃s can detect it in lower concentrations than sharks can detect blood in water. Seeking out water on dry plains was essential for our ancestors. Here’s a geosmin molecule:

Raw sewage can contain harmful bacteria + antibiotics - and when it enters our waterways without being treated enough to destroy both, you get perfect conditions for bacteria resistant to treatment with antibiotics to develop.

Vibrio Vulnificus, a flesh-eating bacteria has recently broke out in Louisiana, killing 5 of the 9 infected. This deadly bacteria is likely to go untested in seafood due to RFK Jr.'s redesignation of the bacteria in FoodNet. 🧵

Predatory bacteria kill and eat other bacteria. Their deadly actions come in many flavors, often via direct physical contact between predator &
prey 🧛

How do they do it?

Pathogens such as bacteria threaten human health, so we dole out antibiotics. The bacteria then develop resistance to the antibiotics. While bacterial threat remains the same, our treatment arsenal is less effective, if it’s effective at all. In essence, that’s the problem caused
