It’s kind of… bacterial?

Forgot to share last week: the molecular control of bacterial immunity review I wrote with @themaxwelllab.bsky.social and Sam Fairburn is out! In it, we cover sensing, activation, and effector mechanisms, as well as phage counter-defence strategies.

Molecular control of bacterial immunity - Nature Structural & Molecular Biology
In this Review, the authors summarize structural, biochemical and genetic insights into bacterial immunity, focusing on steps that link infection sensing to activation and effector function.

Fungal suppression by bacterial metabolite-activated human intestinal γδT-cells is disrupted in Crohn’s disease
Fungi are common members of the gut microbiome, but inflammation can tip them toward harmful forms. This study shows that bacterial signals activate gut γδ T cells to suppress fungi and limit invasive...

Did you know? Fish skin has shown anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that support and improve healing in a variety of wounds including burns and diabetic foot ulcers. Ongoing research is exploring this vs alternative techniques.

Relaxase asymmetry drives initiation of bacterial conjugation | Nature Communications
Relaxase asymmetry drives initiation of bacterial conjugation - Nature Communications
Bacterial conjugation spreads antibiotic resistance among pathogens via plasmid transfer. Here, the authors determine cryo-EM structures of the TraI helicase bound to DNA. These findings reveal the molecular mechanism of DNA processing during conjugation.

Synergy in viral–bacterial co-infection expedites algal bloom demise | Nature
Synergy in viral–bacterial co-infection expedites algal bloom demise - Nature
Viral–bacterial synergy accelerates algal bloom collapse by enhancing virus-induced mortality, driven by Alteromonas chemoattraction and co-infection, revealing a previously unrecognized mortality agent that influences oceanic carbon cycling .

Feels appropriate that this post would go viral (or bacterial?)

📣 We are excited to share our study, led by Constanze Kuhlisch and Eliran Soffer, on how bacteria can hasten the collapse of virus-infected algal blooms, published in Nature! 🥳
This changes not only our views on who drives algal bloom collapse but also on how algal carbon circulates in the ocean 🌊->

It is possible, don't do it. Had a friend that did that and got a bacterial infection.

Crystals require nucleation points & the heat-loving bacteria are covered in negatively charged groups that allow silica to bind & start crystal formation.

The thin channels in the bacterial biofilm could also be "crystal nurseries", where the hot water can unload minerals as it evaporates.

Timing worked out perfectly! First day back from maternity leave and I presented my lab to the department at the DQBM Minisymposium.

The Molecular Plasmid Ecology Lab studies how plasmids interact and why it matters for the spread of antibiotic resistance.

And just in time, we are live: benzlab.ch
Molecular Plasmid Ecology Lab
Plasmids are small DNA molecules that can move between bacterial cells. When a plasmid carries an antibiotic resistance gene, that gene can spread quickly through a bacterial population. We study what...

Clinicians prescribe antibiotics just in case because missing a bacterial infection costs more than an unneeded prescription. The newly FDA-cleared Access MeMed BV targets that uncertainty. My perspective in Healio: www.healio.com/news/infecti...
Bacterial or viral? FDA clears rapid test distinguishing type of infection
The FDA granted clearance to a rapid blood test designed to distinguish between bacterial and viral infections in as little as 15 minutes, according to the test’s manufacturer. The test — k...
