#bareroots
Lovely non-native shade plants like soft pink Aquilegia, 2 kinds of Pulmonaria, 3 kinds of Hellebores in decades-old masses. Lots of invasive old school groundcover too so it took hours of work stripping most of soil down to bareroots yesterday. Started today planting at 7:30am to beat heat (2/2). 🌱

Got warranty replacement for DA rose that didn’t survive—apparently bareroots of ‘Silas Marner’ weren’t up to snuff this year so they sent potted instead which had added bonus of arriving with flowers that nearly knocked me out with their scent.

Today’s #AlwaysBePlanting Report: warranty replacement for DA rose that graft failed on when I planted it last spring & they shipped out waayyyyy late for bareroots for my zone so it was a giant pain to plant, plus 2x Delphinium ‘Dark Blue White Bee’ because I was spent after the rose. #gardening 🌱

Before this farm, I worked in tech. Suburb kid. Apartment dweller. I didn’t know a graft from a garden hose.

Now I’m knee-deep in soil, learning how to not kill bareroots.
Every mistake teaches me something. Mostly humility. And how to use a mattock. #farmlife

Just planted a handful of bareroots in a few shadier beds. Most had shoots ready to pop. Cannot wait!

The espaliers have been there more than 10 years. We bought them as cheap supermarket bareroots at less than £4. We got 25 apples off the Discovery in the first year.

Are rose plants pretty expensive over there too? Are they mostly grafted?

The bareroots from the big box stores are pretty cheap here but ownroots and imports are still pretty expensive.

I see those 12.5€ roses in Europe and wish we had those prices.

I *might* get little pomegranates this year!!!

I got this bareroot, hardy parfianka pomegranate awhile ago, and it's really filled in, but it took 3 years before I finally got flowers that are forming some little fruit 😍

Bareroots are super cost effective, but the patience is hard!
