☀️Golden hour gilds the Barnack stone of Ely Cathedral this week. I’ve heard the monks of Ely paid 8,000 eels a year for this stone.

Barnack Orange apples. One of my favourite dessert apples, crunchy, sweet & juicy. Raised 1904 by William Divers, Head Gardener at Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire from a cross between Barnack Beauty & Cox's Orange Pippin. 🌱🍏

On an overcast and breezy afternoon the first Pasqueflowers of the year were unfurling at Barnack Hills and Holes NNR, their purple petals backed with soft silvery hairs, the blooms emerging from a finely dissected, downy, purplish-green ruff.

St John the Baptist, Barnack presents another of her treasures. A remarkable 15th Century image of the Immaculate Conception. Mary is pierced by light rays emanating from a Trinity grouping (God the father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit). How this piece survived the Reformation is miraculous.

rather lovely grave slab at St John the Baptist, Barnack.
For a small slab it's certainly well covered in decoration.
