Ok im curious and I want to see something!

Everyone reply or QRT with the first fandom you read fan fic for, the platform you read it on, and how old you were at the time. I'll go first

Tonight's Dragonbane featured foggy barrowdowns, a tent too precious to be used as a digging tool, too many too-tight tunnels, crudely-made ducks and not enough rope with @dampscot.bsky.social @madbeardman.bsky.social @amacdon6.bsky.social @jonac.bsky.social @ottomancer.bsky.social

Rereading #LotR #Tolkien
Really appreciated the lengthy departure from the Shire. How Merry & Pippin _AREN'T_ goofballs.
And they encounter perils NOT from Sauron (Old Forest, Barrowdowns).
And Tom Bombadil

Post a picture of your most fragile miniature!

The barrow wight on the right has the most fragile arm I’ve ever come across. Even worse than the ankles on the horses of Riders of Rohan

It's really remarkable, how tight the story is. You want to writer your fantasy with ten thousand page books, fine. But the benchmark ain't that wordy. Anyway, I really enjoyed the reread and you know what? Tom Bombadil and the Barrowdowns kick ass.

After a 2 week hiatus, 10yo and I returned to Middle Earth tonight. Whizzed thru the Barrowdowns with minimal creepy voices, and got safely back to the road thanks to Jolly Old Tom and Fatty Lumpkin

the barrowdowns is also, iirc, where we change narrators. or is that after rivendell?

Why the fuck do people send book parcels without waterproofing them?

This is the UK for fucks sake. Rain is our speciality.

(this message brought to you courtesy of an unnecessarily damp Bree and the Barrowdowns)

I think my most controversial Tolkien opinion is that I’m actually quite fond of Tom Bombadil. Though it’s mostly because without him you loose the Old Forest and the Barrowdowns. Spine crawling horror in what’s basically peaceful Oxfordshire countryside.
One of my friends confessed to struggling to read LOTR. In the pub. With his copy in his bag.

After five minutes of excited and voluble surgery we handed a somewhat abridged and filleted collection of Tolkien's writing back to him in loose chunks.

Tom Bombadil did not survive.

GW’s Barrowdowns set, with hobbits, Bombadil, Goldberry & wights

think that in the moment when it was written, the journey through the forest, the meeting with Tom Bombadil and Goldberry, followed by the Barrowdowns, do a good job of impressing on a reader with no familiarity that this world is deeply and inherently magical, in ways that are both good and scary.

tbh having just re-read it with 10yo, there's a lot to love in the Old FOrest, Bombadil, Barrowdowns sequence. Yes, Tom is a bit stupid but it really captures the transition from bucolic Shire to the dangerous and magical world outside so well.

For anyone interested here's the map that shows the journeys of the Company in this campaign. #TTRPG #MiddleEarth #TheOneRing (notice that the big cowards have repeatedly avoided the Barrowdowns and the Old Forest)

Barrowdowns dot com, before they closed the fic section of the site. linked to it by a friend, though I can't remember if they sent it to me via email, aol instant messenger, or literally wrote down the URL. spring semester of 8th grade, baybees
meant to ask this yesterday & forgot. this was inspired by a tumblr poll

✨ where did you read your very first fic (lj, ffnet, a physical zine, etc.) & when did that happen?

Didn't realise there were so many! A couple of those were among my earliest rpg purchases, wandering amidst the Trollshaws and Barrowdowns.

Hilariously, Barrowdowns is still there.

I love to see the LotR appendices cite reliable sources such as “it is said” and “some say”
July 4, 2024 at 4:53 AM
what most people, who haven’t specialized in intertextual analysis, don’t realize is that Tom Bombadil never leaves the hobbits after the barrowdowns, he’s always there singing silly songs and getting up people’s noses but everyone including the author just ignore him

Like Gollum, orcs draw a LOT from Grendel of Beowulf. Compared to the warmth hungry wights of the Barrowdowns (who share more with the orcs of Old English than Tolkien’s flesh-and-blood bad guys) Grendel is slowly humanized through the poem—going from a “jotunn” to a “cursed man”.
