Seeing Rumeysa Ozturk snatched off the street by masked thugs evoked the actions of so many tyrannies: The Basij is Iran, Mukhabarat in Egypt or Syria, Mano Blanca in Guatemala & El Salvador, FRAPH in Haiti. They're practicing on foreigners, they'll move onto citizens soon enough.

during the Green Movement in 2009, in a fully consolidated authoritarian state, facing down the basij, fewer were killed by the security services than died in the BLM protests in 2020.
I would caution anyone entertaining this sentiment. Mass protests are likely to be dangerous. We no longer live in a country where the right to peacefully assemble exists for opponents of the regime.
