My amazing daughter has hosted 3 Pink Ribbon Breakfasts and raised over $1500 for the Breast Cancer Foundation - a cause close to my heart (literally). Nurse Louise at BCFNZ has been a huge support for me as I've navigated the cancer journey. You can donate too 🥰

Oh I didn’t I’ll go look for it.

I found the video about self checks on BCFNZ though. That’s good intel about the mammograms.

The last few weeks have been like a freight train going past but I finally made the donation to fundraise.bcf.org.nz. supporting BCFNZ
#BlueSkyPinkbreakfast #KikorangiMāwheroKai. Thanks to @thesewphist.bsky.social for organising this.

Actually, this reminds me I was going to ring the BCFNZ nurses to ask about something…
June 11, 2025 at 2:02 AM
Did you see my post from Sunday over on main?

I would check BCFNZ for resources. The key messaging these days is around knowing your normal, over doing a perfect self-check.
Also, mammograms are recommended from 40 and it’s worth paying for them until you become eligible for funded screening.

Not at all. BCFNZ do a wonderful job of supporting patients, but the success of their campaigns can also mean they become painful reminders to those of us who have either been patients ourselves or lost loved ones.

Hey #Kikorangi… do we want to do a #BlueSkyPinkBreakfast again this year? A virtual event where we pick a day to make breakfast/brunch at home, share a photo, and donate what we would have spent if we’d gone out to a café to BCFNZ?
We did one last year, the year before we did it in the other place.
March 24, 2025 at 5:33 AM
All of this is to say, mammograms are actually recommended annually from 40-50 (see BCFNZ and many other reliable source).
You can pay privately for screening ones yourself from an earlier age, and for the years in between (funded in AoNZ is every second year). It’s not horrendously expensive.

Anyway, if you've seen my posts this last week about #BlueSkyPinkBreakfast #KikorangiMāwheroKai and weren't quite sure what BCFNZ were about, now you know!

They also provide funding for drug research and lobby for expanded access to new treatments as they become available.

Want to donate to help?

When my arm started swelling a few months after surgery, I was able to ring the BCFNZ nurse, who was able to organise referral forms for my GP to apply for funding for lymphoedema assessment and education (this one may have changed, as there is more support for lymphoedema via Te Whatu Ora now).
May 25, 2024 at 5:32 AM
A wee note here: sometimes I hear people say "all that fundraising they do, and I got nothing when I was going through this".
BCFNZ operate within the privacy laws. They are not part of Te Whatu Ora, they are not given your contact details on diagnosis. You do have to make initial contact yourself.
May 25, 2024 at 5:26 AM
Speaking of the nurses: BCFNZ employ specialist breast nurses to answer calls on their helpline.
There is so much to absorb when you're going through treatment. Your oncologist(s) and surgeons and their nurses will do their best, but they're very busy with patients. BCFNZ nurses have more time.
May 25, 2024 at 5:18 AM
I'm now involved in a different BC patient forum, but the difference with the BCFNZ one is that they have specialist breast nurses in reading and commenting too. So you not only get the peer reckons, but also, if they think it's needed, a nurse will message you privately offering help.
May 25, 2024 at 5:14 AM
Finally I signed up to the BCFNZ forums. Back then, they were on a standalone platform (I think they're on FB now). Having contact with others who were going through the same as I was was incredibly helpful on so many levels. Especially the "yes, I needed that much treatment, and yes, I survived".
May 25, 2024 at 5:12 AM
But what does the work they do look like in practical terms?

I've been sharing info from BCFNZ for years - well before I was diagnosed myself. That's because I was the third one in my immediate family to get Breast Cancer. So I regularly encourage knowing your normal - start checks from age 20.

Hey team, look at what we've managed to achieve - $762 raised for BCFNZ this year - we've outstripped what we did back in the other place in 2022 by $7!

That's $762 that will go towards awareness and education, research into cures for breast cancer, and direct support for those are diagnosed.

This morning I’m staying at home for the #BlueSkyPinkbreakfast #KikorangiMāwheroKai, and I’ve made a café breakfast $$ donation to fundraise.bcf.org.nz/fundraisers/..., supporting BCFNZ in their education, research, and practical help for patients. Will you join me by staying home and donating too?
May 24, 2024 at 9:21 PM
For those who like to keep track of such things (me), so far we've come together to donate enough to keep the Pink Campervan out in the community, equipped with specialist breast nurses, for 4 hours. Wouldn't it be fabulous if tomorrow we made that a whole day?

If you’re planning on donating to BCFNZ, now is a good time! Xero are matching dollar for dollar today!
Oh hey! Head's up, if you're planning on joining in on the #BlueSkyPinkBreakfast #KikorangiMāwheroKai on Saturday, but are in a position to make your donation tomorrow, Xero are apparently doubling all donations to BCFNZ from 10 am up to a total of $30K.

Ok, more thanks, because we've just hit $333 (love a round number!) which means that so far, we've come together to raise enough to keep Pinkie (the caravan) out in the community for 3 hours, allowing specialist breast nurses to provide free advice.
