#beatsheet
Every screenwriter who outlines first will tell you the blank page never kills a script. Every screenwriter who writes into the dark will tell you outlines kill the discovery. Which one are you?

Currently looking at an old beatsheet I wrote for a comic idea I was workshopping called "Infinite Flesh." In it an incarnation of Adam Kadmon battles a kaiju on rooftops (and what may be a bit of the tism). Gnosticism can be fun, right?

Every screenwriter who says they 'just wing it' is either lying or producing work that reads like it. Which side are you actually on?

Every screenwriter who outlines first produces a tighter third act. Every one. Vote below, then tell us why you're wrong.

I need to write more weird shit like this. Because who wouldn't want to read an asexual romance featuring an incarnation of Adam Kadmon fighting kaiju and other creatures from a dimension made of infinite flesh?

Am I right?

I'm editing my OG beatsheet of my show from film school five years ago and now all of the sudden everything's starting to make sense again

Finally finished the second draft of my beatsheet for Brotherhood #screenwriter #Screenwriting #scriptsky

I haven't exactly documented the process. 😅
For multiple povs I made a spreadsheet to track each pov and I alternated them along with the plot progress.
For the mystery I used the 15 points beatsheet (aka 3 acts structure), and decided where and how my red herrings show up.
In summary.

Lofty goals. I am beyond relieved when I hit a word goal with a piece AND it makes any sense 😂
Last time I tried to follow a beatsheet I very effectively blocked myself.

What’s your method for doing a final polish?

I create a new beatsheet from the script in excel. Left column is page and beat. Top: relationships, theme, character, scare (polishing a horror), timeline in top bar. Then an active verb pass. Sometimes do it on cards😵‍💫#screenwriting

I have yet to find “the method”. Usually the 4 Act beatsheet works for me. I outline every project over 10k. I need an outline or I get too overwhelmed with possibility 😂but I also have to keep them loose, because once the characters start talking they develop minds of their own.

I just asked ChatGPT (on a bit of a whim) to give me a "Save the Cat!" style beatsheet for Clovenhoof (the 1st novel written by Iain Grant & me). It came back with a pretty solid beatsheet. I guess it means that ChatGPT more or less has *all* novels somehow

was going to joke about this being a potential undiscovered beatsheet for a Dad's Army movie but now i find out there are two of them anyway— a reboot one in TWENTY SIXTEEN The Mostest Cursededest Year???

A story is more than technique or a slavish following of an arc or beatsheet. Those are things that help support a weak story. A good story needs no structure. It only needs to affect the reader/listener.

Pretty sure that this cybertruck explosion was caused by a screenwriter trying to tick off 'opening image' and 'theme stated' from his Save the Cat beatsheet ready to pitch the worst movie of 2025

#ScribesAndMakers Apr 11: Do you use spreadsheets to help in your process?

Oh yeah. I've put together this whole multi-tab spreadsheet for organizing a WIP. There are 8 tabs, and I use the ones most appropriate for the thing I'm working on.
April 11, 2025 at 12:17 PM
#WritersCoffeeClub Feb 13: How do you organize your writing projects?

Well, the intent is to use two main folders: "books" and "workspace". The first is any archived completed works. The second is any WIPs. And each piece has its own subfolder that contains the manuscript, the beatsheet, etc.
