When a character's big choice feels flat in Act One, writers usually add more reasons for them to make it. Newtson (1974) explains why that backfires: multiple rewards create attributional ambiguity. Strip the payoffs down to one.

The Single-Payoff Rule: Stripping Motive Ambiguity
Why giving a character three good reasons to make a choice leaves the audience guessing who they actually are.

#WritingCommunity Someone found the origin of the Shaggy Dog Story. I don't have to hunt it down. Earliest was 1919. It's home grown in the US, a little behind of the Confessional. Seeee~~~ there's more story structures around you than you think. #storystructure

A chapter ending doesn't always need a cliffhanger. Sometimes a powerful realization is enough to make the reader turn the page.

If your ending feels difficult to write, look at the beginning. The ending usually becomes easier when the story has clearly established what your character wants, fears, and needs to change.
