Grote Markt, Haarlem, featuring the Bavokerk. Gerrit Berckheyde (born OTD, more or less, 1638) loved painting this site! Here, one of his last versions from 1696.

1Herengracht, Amsterdam, in 1671. How it looked when there were still empty lots and no trees! Love this record of a long-ago moment by Gerrit Berckheyde, whose day is today.

In the Netherlands in the 17th century, bakers announced the arrival of fresh bread by blasting on a horn. In this painter in the Worcester Art Museum, Job Adriaensz. Berckheyde portrays himself as a baker surrounded by his wares. #earlymodern

Dat de Ridderzaal op het Binnenhof er in de afgelopen eeuwen anders uitzag, blijkt uit dit schilderij van Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde uit circa 1690.

Don't google art when you're peckish!
I stumbled upon this delicious 1681 painting by Job Berckheyde, and now I'm going to have to make myself a midnight snack.
The horn means the bread is ready... fresh from the oven, can you smell it?

Old and new in 17th-century Amsterdam: Grimburgwal w/ Oudezijds Herenlogement, a cool modern edifice next to a lovely old step-gabled warehouse. Now gone, alas! Painted by Gerrit Berckheyde.

2/2 Another angle on the Herengracht in 1672. Now it looks quaint and old, but you see that originally it was severe, modern, and imposing. As painted by Gerrit Berckheyde.

Born a few days before this day in 1638, died a few days after this day in 1698, Gerrit Berckheyde of Haarlem. Painter of cities. Here by himself, w/ portrait of his brother Job on back wall, 1675.

Job Berckheyde painted himself (left) & his brother Gerrit (right) as bakers, because they proudly tooted their horns for one another's products. Which were paintings, but you get the idea! Today is Gerrit’s day.
