(Manicules are manuscript—that is, hand-drawn—while printer’s fists are those little fists you see printers printing with) (not trying to be an asshole just ugh they’re two different things to a bibliographer)
(Actually they’re printer’s fists not manicules)

Any time you have to pack books for a move you realize how annoyingly (& beautifully?) unstandardized book shapes and sizes are.

As a book historian and bibliographer I often scratch my head at weird decisions made concerning book production in historical periods, but we’re still doing it!

A famous anecdote about the bibliographer ANL Munby has it that when he encountered car trouble, he had no choice but to fix the gasket using the parchment leaf from a medieval Antiphonal. When asked how old his classic Bugatti was, he answered, “parts of it date back to the 15th century.”
A statement to send shivers down the spine of any medievalist: "The manuscripts were acquired by the General Archives from P.J. Ghysels, a land surveyor in Alost, in 1835 ... Ghysels allegedly bought them from his tobacco dealer, who intended to use them as cigar wrappings." #MedievalSky

A future bibliographer in the making!
Today I was standing at the kitchen counter when my 4-yr-old asked out of the blue, "Why does your shirt say 'book' on it?"

How appropriate that my @rarebookschool.bsky.social shirt should be one of the first things he's read without first knowing its context! I'm so proud of my budding reader!

As a librarian and bibliographer I appreciate Lehrer’s commitment to the bit.
With Tom Lehrer's passing, I suppose this is a moment to share the story of the prank he played on the National Security Agency, and how it went undiscovered for nearly 60 years.

But at the back of the book, something even more exciting is happening! Well, exciting for an analytical #bibliographer, that is. The composition of the book has been altered after printing! [8/16]

In 2025, the Academy Library was gifted a 19th-century bone with an inscription in Irish. Thady Connellan (Tadhg Ó Coinnialláin, c.1780–1854), a bibliographer and schoolmaster from Sligo, made this and various inscriptions on other bones.

So here's to working class bibliographer Jim Bracken, who rolled into an Oxford College event like this once in a red Hawaiian shirt, shorts, and flipflops. His OSU contract included a stipulation that he need never wear a white collared shirt.
Looking at an event that says Black Tie is "optional but encouraged" and I guarantee they think they're being inclusive but they're really really not and will not be comfortable being called on that.
