this post is so important because it traces the direct lineage of gfs -> bigtable from which percolator, megastore, spanner, f1, zanzibar, etc all evolved

gfs's append-only nature is likely the original reason LSMs came into mainstream use

Former Googlers dropped rare infrastructure lore: Orkut started as an in-house 20% project running on C# and .NET inside Google. It had to be rewritten in Java and C++, and ended up as the first production user of Bigtable. #programming 2/4

@jameswallis.bsky.social Is attempting the #BigTable initiative but alas poor SEO means that Las Iguanas is crowding him out of the results.

The #TIN is an attempt at getting people together and I run monthly meetings in Southampton which are really helping boost that community.
In addition to being a FTSE100 company, and thus bigger than Greggs.

The UK has no idea how much money the Tabletop sector is worth. Nor does Ireland.

Board games, war games, card games, even TTRPG. Then the ancillary industries that support them. Tokens, minis, art, boxes, distribution. Unknown.

Exactly.

#bigTable is a plan to try and bring the industry together but apparently trying to get cats all going in the same direction is hard.

Serving as a clearing house for jobs, cf. #BigTable which has not yet gotten off the ground.

Reviews of games, although that seems like a great way to be the target of a flame war from the pouterati.

Feels like really high end products with high margins are the starting points.

Pagerank as an algorithm, to implement practically, required a copy of the web stored in RAM. That was what made it impractical for others to implement.
You can call BigTable and Borg and MapReduce architecture or algorithms, but it's still the same kind of thing at different scales.

"I need Spanner" for a 2GB database

This clip from TokenDrop podcast starts with a joke that lands a real point: a Google engineer leaves for a startup, needs to build a 2GB database, and says "I need Spanner, I need Bigtable." Most problems don't need that scale

This reminds me of the Yegge anecdote about spinning up a BigTable during his Noogler orientation, forgetting about it, and then being alerted that it was still running several years later when the team reached out to ask him to migrate to a new version.
