I've written a review on what I think is an extremely exciting direction in cryo-EM:

we don’t fully understand how anesthetics work, you know. GABAA-R target effects are fairly straightforward but there also seem to be some fascinating lipid bilayer-dependent mechanics at play and a whole lot of competing theories about…

Why are biological membranes asymmetric, with different lipids in the two bilayer leaflets? Discovered in the 70s, lipid asymmetry is linked to many cellular processes, but why the cell needs it is largely unclear. @pavelbarahtjan.bsky.social addresses this question: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

In @justinditrani.bsky.social final postdoc paper (with contributions from many others) we show that forming/purifying vesicles (here from M. smegmatis) allows structure det'n of *endogenous* membrane proteins in their *native lipid bilayer*

The fluid mosaic model of an animal or plant cell describes cell membranes as both solid and permeable. It depicts the membrane as a flexible lipid bilayer with proteins embedded within it, like a crisscross pattern.

Out now in @natmicrobiol.nature.com: Bacillus subtilis builds protein filaments that act as a pseudomembrane, pulling quinone out of the bilayer and carrying it into the cytosol for reduction by NADH dehydrogenase, well away from the membrane itself.

Twist-programmable superconductivity in spin–orbit-coupled bilayer graphene - Nature
The superconductivity in Bernal bilayer graphene that emerges from the spin–orbit coupling induced by proximal tungsten diselenide can be tuned by modulating the twist angle between the two materials.

Amazingly, this gave us a high-confidence transmembrane channel for both mouse and human NS3, with oleic acids forming a bilayer-like pattern.

Our group now call this the “fatty acid hack.”
