What a relief!
No billposters for Bovril or Players. No adverts for bleach or Nestles. No "Fish and Chips" signs, or cliched corner shops.

We had heard them, sometimes standing in the rain almost out of earshot, so that only the shouted words came through, and had read them, on proclamations that were slapped up by billposters over other proclamations, now for a long time, and I had seen nothing sacred,

On today’s date of 1940, “Billposters” hit theaters.

Donald Duck and Goofy get hired pasting posters for an unnamed soup company. Goofy fails to paste bills on a windmill. Donald fights with a farm goat. After a chase, the goat keeps head-butting the duo around windmill blades.

Anyone who uses Hemingway's novel as a historical source deserves to be made a fool of. But I still think this passage from 'A Farewell to Arms' is important, to me at least.
Extract from Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms: 'I was always embarrassed by the words sacred, glorious, and sacrifice and the expression in vain. We had heard them, sometimes standing in the rain almost out of earshot, so that only the shouted words came through, and had read them, on proclamations that were slapped up by billposters over other proclamations, now for a long time, and I had seen nothing sacred, and the things that were glorious had no glory and the sacrifices were like the stockyards at Chicago if nothing was done with the meat except to bury it. There were many words that you could not stand to hear and finally only the names of places had dignity. Certain numbers were the same way & certain dates and these with the names of the places were all you could say & have them mean anything. Abstract words such as glory, honor, courage, or hallow were obscene beside the concrete names of villages, the numbers of roads, the names of rivers, the numbers of regiments & the dates.'

One of my favourite Donald Duck shorts Billposters (and this favourite jello moment of mine) turns 86 years old on Sunday having been released in 1940. Some things never get old.

Jello head test featuring Sirfetch'd in wellies. Based off a scene from the Donald Duck cartoon Billposters with the jello/gelatine squashing and stretching Sirfetch'd's face.

Also a welly sole test (not the best to be honest).

#Sirfetchd #Pokemon #Wellies #Jello #Gelatine
Sirfetch'd's head fully submerged in jello/gelatine. He is wearing orange wellies. Scene from Billposters with Donald's head stuck in glue which is wobbling like gelatine. His face has been squished with his left eye wide open but his right eye squashed shut. Sirfetch'd's head really squashed in the jello. Bits of jello are also dripping down onto his webbed feet and wellies. Same scene but from Billposters. Donald's eyes are squished to the top and his beak at the bottom, the jello looking as if it will squish down all over him.

🍿 85th: Billposters
Billposters
Donald and Goofy are putting up advertising posters in a farm. Goofy prepares to post on a windmill, but his tools keep disappearing and reappearing on the windmill blades. Donald puts up his posters, a picture of a soup can, and a goat eats them immediately. Goofy gets stuck to his poster after it comes around on the windmill. Donald, being his calm, even-tempered self, gets into a battle with the goat.
