#biodiversity hotspot
This mirrors the findings of archaic humans 💀 such as Denisovans in the region and highlights the Altai as a biodiversity hotspot to further characterize. The survival of yak X across glacial-interglacial cycles also highlights the Altai as a long-term refugium.

With financial help from several nonprofits, the tribe has purchased a nearly seven-acre parcel outside Yachats considered a “biodiversity hotspot.”
After more than 170 years, Siletz Tribe to reclaim ceded land
Partners say this effort was driven by growing concerns that Rocky Shores might be developed for real estate purposes, which would threaten the land’s delicate ecosystem and the Siletz people’s historic ties to it.

Very happy this one is finally out. Laura Bertola wrangled genomic data from 27 taxa, frogs to conifers, across one biodiversity hotspot, and kept a couple dozen of us pointed in the same direction over a long haul. Great explainer thread

The Mediterranean is the world's second largest biodiversity hotspot, and its restoration holds lessons well beyond the region. Our latest #SER2027 article, "A Region in Motion," explores them. Read it and submit a proposal by 7 Oct: https://ser2027.org/mediterranean-basin/

A Region in Motion: Lessons and Opportunities in the Mediterranean Basin
Conservation and restoration efforts are most efficient when considered as part of a broader ecological and social system rather than isolated sites. Coordination across landscapes ensures that interventions account for the interdependencies between terrestrial ecosystems, such as forests, wetlands, and rivers, with human activities. – Union for the Mediterranean, Mediterranean Ecosystems Restoration: Safeguarding Natural Heritage …

This summer, researchers announced the discovery of nine new species of deep-sea sponges off the coast of Alaska. Five of them were found in the Aleutian Islands.

There are now 232 known sponge species in Alaska, with the Aleutian Islands recognized as a global hotspot for sponge biodiversity.

New checklist by Keralam research team records 3,261 flowering plant species in Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve
A new checklist of flowering plants in South India’s Agasthyalamalai Biosphere Reserve (ABR) compiled by the Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (JNTBGRI) in Thiruvananthapuram, Keralam, seeks to reaffirm the global significance of the Western Ghats as a biodiversity hotspot and the need for focused, region-specific strategies for protecting it. The JNTBGRI research team documented 3,261 species, 26 sub-species and 28 varieties belonging to 1,139 genera and 190 families in the ABR. Among other things, they recorded a “high level” of endemism and biogeographic affinity with Sri Lankan and even tropical American flora. The astonishing heft of ABR’s floral wealth upholds its position as “one of the most significant centres of angiosperm diversity and endemism in the Indian subcontinent.” Plant Science Today has published the ‘Comprehensive checklist of the flowering plants of the Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve, South India’ compiled by E.S. Santhosh Kumar, S.M. Shareef, P.P. Anusha, K.A. Rashmi and Rejitha Joseph of JNTBGRI. Spread over Keralam and Tamil Nadu in the southern extremity of the Western Ghats, the “hill systems and vegetation of the ABR constitute a biologically unique, yet ecologically fragile landscape,” the research paper accompanying the checklist noted. In the ABR, Fabaceae is the most...

Conserve biodiversity for future generations: Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot
BENGALURU: “The seeds we conserve today will become the foundation of food security for future generations,” said Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Friday, stressing the need to conserve biodiversity and sustainably use plant genetic resources to build a resilient bio-economy. He called for the integration of traditional knowledge, modern science and digital technologies. Addressing a national seminar on “Harnessing Plant Genetic Resources of Peninsular India – From Biodiversity Hotspot to Sustainable Bio-resource Hub” organised by the Indian Society of Plant Genetic Resources (ISPGR), the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) at Hesaraghatta, the Governor highlighted Karnataka’s rich biodiversity and its traditional crops, including millets, sorghum, oilseeds, and medicinal plants. He said indigenous crop varieties that are overlooked today could emerge as climate-resilient, disease-resistant and nutrient-rich crops in the future. He said transforming Peninsular India from a biodiversity hotspot into a sustainable bio-resource hub would require a strong value chain covering conservation, research, innovation, value addition and entrepreneurship, while ensuring greater benefits for farmers. He urged universities and research institutions to strengthen the “Lab to Land” and “Land to Lab” approaches by incorporating farmers’ experiences and traditional knowledge into scientific research...
