Steeply sloping grassland is a great place for terraced agriculture which doesn’t work for the big equipment of the Industrial Food Chain, but is great for biointensive agriculture and great for farm-to-table places where kids can see where their food comes from.

Yes, you can have all the heorloom tomatoes you want, all the green beans, peas, potatoes, herbs, peppers, teas, berries, most fruits… you’d have to freeze and can. You might have to buy grains. This guy had taught farmers globally how to 3x their harvests johnjeavons.org 🌱 I wish he still taught!

Small-scale biointensive farm in France: "a single farmer on one quarter acre, with no machinery except hand tools, could generate approx $84,000 (CAD) or $66,700 (US) gross sales/year...about 43 hrs work/week (30 on site and 13 admin) with 4 wks vacation/year."

bingo. the most fantastically biointensive farming requires about 65x65' of land to barely feed a single person
November 8, 2024 at 3:10 AM
...is more efficient in output per labor hour it's actually LESS efficient in output per unit of land area, and 3) ignoring the efficiencies of super-intensive horticultural techniques like Jeavons' biointensive method that can feed one person on 4000 sq ft.

Just asked! She said yes, because she shifted to YouTube, but she might return to it again. I still listen to the old episodes. The Grow Biointensive interview with Jon Jeavons is PACKED with stuff. His book is also fantastic, I recco his course if he still has it.

It's frustrating isn't it? You want to be sustainable & buying in compost feels - not that.
But it's not a failure.

I take inspiration from the biointensive approach. 60% ish of crops to produce for the compost heap.
Sweetcorn, sunflowers, field beans, comfrey, alfalfa. Plus much woodchip.
