Here is my favorite find from Tucson collected just off the Catalina Highway below the eastern front of the Santa Catalina Mt.s, a metamorphic core complex. Sparklies are large clusters of biotite. Also contains feldspar and quartz. Anyone familiar with these rocks? ⚒️🧪 Pardon my poor photography.

Been a while since I did a #ThinSectionThursday. Here is some beautiful larvikite (pyroxene monzonite): titan-augite, oxides and some biotite surrounded by large feldspars. This rock is widely used as a decorative stone but is equally appealing in thin section 🧪⚒️

I “borrowed” this rock from outside my building at JPL as it’s pretty representative of a lot of the rocks in the area. It’s a slightly gneissic granodiorite, probably of the Mt. Lowe intrusion from the early Triassic. Lots of plagioclase feldspar (white) and hornblende or biotite (black).
