Yellow-headed Blackbirds (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus) breed in marshes and wetlands across the Canadian Prairies, including in southern Alberta. Males often perch on cattails, singing loudly to defend territories and attract females.

Baird’s Sandpiper, one of many ‘peeps’ passing through on the way to the arctic right now. Unfortunately the populations of birds like these aren’t doing so well nowadays #birdwatching #birdsofalberta #yeg #nature #naturephotograpy

Had a great morning birding in the badlands of Midland Provincial Park before visiting the Royal Tyrrell Museum. This pair of Mountain Bluebirds were the highlight #birdwatching #drumheller #alberta #birdsofalberta #albertaparks

I was excited to come across a small flock of Black-necked Stilts outside of town today. Years ago this species was a relative rarity in the province, but it seems to be establishing itself further north these days #birdwatching #birdsofalberta #yeg

In addition to owls, we had good numbers of White-winged Crossbills this winter around #yeg, and they seem to have been our most common winter finch this time around #birdwatching #birdsofalberta #birdsofedmonton #edmonton #alberta

The American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana) has a specialized, upwardly curved bill with sensitive nerve endings at the tip, which allows it to forage in the muddy, shallow waters of the wetlands it inhabits.

These birds love berries! Bohemian Waxwings (Bombycilla garrulus) can be found across the province year-round, hanging out in large social flocks, and most likely snacking on some berries.

Some cultures consider Common Ravens (Corvus corax) to be harbingers of bad luck, while others see them as a symbol of wisdom and magic; either way, we think they’re pretty fab 🐦‍⬛🖤

Here's a Superb Owl to kick off your football weekend! 🏈
#DYK that the Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) is one of the smallest Owl species in North America? They often only grow to around 20 cm, or the size of a large hamster.
