huh.

you what didn't get hacked? bluebooks, printed essays, grading notebooks, even excel files on my pc for tracking grades.
Kind of surprised that this hasn't been bigger news. It's finals week for a whole lot of universities, and yet, Canvas (a learning/grading platform used by ~9,000 schools globally) is currently inaccessible because of a pay-or-have-your-data-leaked hack.

“PAY OR LEAK”: Hackers Target Big Higher Ed Vendor
The criminal extortion group ShinyHunters breached Instructure last week. The hackers, who have also attacked individual universities, demanded the ed-tech giant pay up or face a data leak.

I've heard bluebooks are coming back. Current fantasy is a return to fine penmanship.

Thinking of going fully analog as a response. I hate Canvas. Back to bluebooks baby.

Bluebooks. I've had a pretty good semester by requiring that all writing be done in class.

Citation checking is so critical in brief writing that when I was a paralegal at Covington & Burling, we had like a three day seminar on it.

Nobody bluebooks anymore???
hey did anyone else hear about the *Boies Schiller partner* busted for submitting a brief with AI hallucinations? who was busted by counsel for Scientology?

Bring back bluebooks

I genuinely don't want to have to go back to handwritten quizzes and bluebooks in class. I really really fucking don't.

Post: At some point, we're going to have to make students write in bluebooks using pen to avoid the perils of AI.

Me: At some point, law review editors are going to have to make professors write articles in bluebooks using pen to avoid the perils of AI.

Giving my first exam in years on Thursday in my Colonial/Revolutionary History class. In class writing assignment, bringing bluebooks for them, where they will analyze a primary source for the entire class period.

BlueBooks, physical copies, and notebook assignments this semester not only stopped AI use but also increased class participation and discussion tenfold.
Does anyone else bristle at this framing? WSJ says blue books are “torturing” students with hand cramps, and “nobody likes them.”

Listen, students have been outsourcing everything to AI and cheating their way through college. Blue books should be celebrated as a return to authentic human learning.
They Were Every Student’s Worst Nightmare. Now Blue Books Are Back.
Cheating with ChatGPT has become a huge problem for colleges. The solution is painfully old-school.

Bluebooks or lockdown browser?

reintroducing bluebooks is for babies, i’m making my students chisel on stone

My finals are already done (and my university doesn't use canvas) but all of my finals are, in fact, done on physical paper without outside aids.

Bluebooks for history exams (essays), Latin exams are exam papers with sentences and passages and a space to write a translation after each.

I think a lot of people don't really realize this pedagogically: writing, as in prose, will be fine. we taught people how to write for literal millennia without computers. there will be adjustment pains in switching to bluebooks, but it's fine, it's totally fixable. but teaching coding is *fucked*

“Just do in person” is absolutely going to be a substantial part of the answer, but it is sort of annoying the “just do bluebooks, so simple” thing wrt AI and teaching. like it’s a *lot* more complex than that. a lot of shit the modern classroom relies on will have to totally revamped.

not the point at all but imagine reading entire bluebooks of this.

restricted laptop all the way
So, I read through the transcription part of the Lash paper again. Again, I am okay with using AI to assist with difficult handwriting samples.

That said. I’m really not convinced that it says “Yankees” after Irish. It looks like Irish Indian to me with missing comma. I’ll chew on that.

HOWEVER:

my most conservative opinion is that you can't technical-solution your way out of a values problem, and relying on generative AI to do your work is a values problem---not a moral failing, necessarily, just a values problem-that classroom technology bans or reversion to bluebooks won't really solve

Then finally there's the matter of financial or structural support for teaching in ways that make AI harder to use (mostly analog stuff). Having more copiers and bluebooks and (gasp!) support for physical materials in the library would all help, and we can creatively think of many more.

As a professor with a cache of bluebooks, I’d humbly request more non-cursive handwriting practice.
Letting our kids be kids also means getting back to the basics. That’s why, earlier this year, I signed into law a bipartisan bill that requires cursive handwriting to be taught in Pennsylvania schools.
