an antiquated method of learning, it is at the core of how real learning happens. Sure, we do still have options other than bluebooks, but those options require a lot more person-hours than many faculty have available. I know it looks easy from the outside, but it's really not.

Giving my first exam in years on Thursday in my Colonial/Revolutionary History class. In class writing assignment, bringing bluebooks for them, where they will analyze a primary source for the entire class period.

Your general point about bluebooks I think is right, but the AP-ification of school for college-bound students, combined and less practice at that type of on-the-spot hand-written work makes, is harder to for students to shine in the format. A return might change this, but there is a learning curve.

AI is screwing up journal papers:
Journal editor asks authors of 10 submitted papers to meet and discuss their paper. Of the 7 that showed up, 3 were unable to answer basic questions about the paper and 3 had difficulty when asked further questions on technical details…

It does give me hope for eventually getting myself back into the community college classroom. When I was last there, I was the oddball who used bluebooks and did essay outlines in class, as a group. Turns out I was just ahead of the curve 🤷♀️

Most everyone is suggesting everything to handle AI other than teaching our students about morality and ethics.
The profs at my college would hand out the question sheets and bluebooks for midterms and finals, then go back to their offices. We'd walk over and handover the blue books to them.

I honestly don't know how we get back to the conventional research essay. And that's a big problem, because our whole system of academic knowledge production sorta depends upon it

Yeah, you're going to need to write fast and at least semi-legibly in your BlueBooks. But also, it's actually really nice being able to scribble something down and have it reprinted in the nicest font and format you can think of, with any color-coding or tags you find convenient.
