#bluehost
Y'all I literally just use Wordpress dot org and pay 15 bucks a month to host the fucker at Bluehost, been doing that for six years running now and it's been fine. you don't need to use substack
Instead of Substack, consider: starting something called a "website"

I've been pecking at comic stuff between other things.
I bought a new domain name for the website but bluehost wants 90 bucks to give it an SSL certificate so I'll probably just wait until the end of the year and switch services. Bluehost can eat a dick. (No Let's Encrypt).

If you've been wondering what happened to freethoughtblogs, it turns out it has been officially owned by a ghost, Ed Brayton. I'm trying to resolve the ownership. I'm trying convince Bluehost that I'm not dead, but my partner is.

Finally transferring my sites away from Bluehost to a Canadian provider, so they may be inaccessible while I transfer things over. I am excited tho!

Bluehost is using an unevidenced claim that freethoughtblogs is "engaging in fraudulent activities" made by a guy calling himself "Deathlord" to shut us down. It's chickenshit nonsense. I am not happy with bluehost.

Dreamhost and Bluehost are the GOAT, I pay for Bluehost myself with my blog site. I will eventually have to move my portfolio over too

yeah bluehost is helping me out, they seem to have a backup so they're restoring it

Unless costs have magically inflated, the cost to the registrar per domain registered is about $0.25, which might seem like a pittance, but at 40M users, that cost is $10M (assuming everyone opts in)

Now if only Bluesky could pry Bluehost out of the claws of the PE firm that holds it...

Still stymied by Bluehost

Does anyone have a recommendation for a platform to host your own website? I've used bluehost in the past but they were awful when I tried to cancel.

I roll w godaddy too and remember considering bluehost at the time. It’s been pretty un-fussy for years for me at the lowest level of just portfolio site.

Yikes. I came VERY close to falling for an Evite phishing scam. Sent from someone I'd communicated with yesterday, so it looked real - but the domain for the RSVP pointed to Bluehost instead of evite-dot-com. Wanted me to put in my Gmail account info - which I did not do.

BE CAREFUL.

the pettiness won, but bluehost is being a nightmare so I’ll set it up in the next day or so if it’s still this same cycle of bs from Ineligible Dave

I hope it's okay to piggyback off this quote-

For a rundown since I've had a lot of ppl asking about my site; I used Wordpress with the Toocheke theme and (will soon be) using BlueHost as the server. It was roughly $220 to get it rolling. I had help from a friend who makes websites.
I know I'm from a different era, but I still think it's comparatively easier to own your comic site than trying to promote yourself on censored platform full of desperate people who treat each other as competitors instead of friends/peers.

Self-promoting + intentional community is the solution, imo
It's definitely difficult getting a separate site going since it feels like you then need to put in even more time to spreading the URL via social media, but holy shit, avoiding censorship restrictions and ads all over the place is so worth it

Love to waste an hour trying to figure out why Bluehost won't let me update anything, only to get them on the phone and be told 'not letting you update anything is a known issue, just try not updating anything for awhile'

Now I have to relearn how to launch a site using BlueHost and Wordpress lol. But I bought the domain so we can at least start to make this project a reality now.

Went with bluehost

One observation from posting identical content on Bluehost and Threads that may be a bit against the grain. There seems to be more of a mobbing mentality on the latter platform.

Bluehost seems to be holding my domain name hostage, I gather in an effort to sell me more products and services. Avoid them at all costs.

But see if I care. Hereafter you can find my web page at jhwatrous.github.io in case you're looking for it.
I ditched my old website and created a new one on GitHub Pages:

johnwatrous.com

It's a great option for a static web page, particularly if you like to do your own CSS styling rather than flipping through pre-built templates that are never quite right.

The registrar for freethoughtblogs, bluehost.com, is more interested in pandering to an Islamist fanatic who filed a bogus complaint than in actually providing a service to their customers. Do not ever give your business to bluehost.

UPDATE: It's fixed!

I'm so glad we're closed for two weeks starting Monday. That'll give me time to FINALLY move my site off of Bluehost.

don't use Bluehost, kids

they're the worst, along with GoDaddy and HostGator and every other site owned by Newfold Digital/Endurance International Group
