Very good story from the Vashon Beachcomber. "Bonadea, 76, was headed to an anti-ICE protest that started at the downtown waterfront, her wife, Laura Belt, said Tuesday morning. Biking meant “everything” to Bonadea, Belt said. “It was her escape, it was her exercise, it was what filled her soul.”"

Maridee Bonadea was killed because we value convenient parking more than the safety of people on bikes.

When was the last time someone died because parking was not available next to their home?

We need to stop debating convenience vs safety. Safety comes first, on every single street.

The city could take emergency action and sign the uphill side of this street no-parking TODAY, or we can do 3 years of outreach and foot-dragging while we wait for the blood spilled to be enough to placate the "process".

The narrative that Rainier Valley doesn’t want or need scooter and bike infrastructure is so clearly outdated. The status quo is not safe and it’s not meeting the needs of people using micromobility or anyone else who wants to or needs to be able to get places safely outside of a vehicle.

Critical Mass Seattle will ride tomorrow to the ghost bikes of Cristian Salyer and Maridee Bonadea, both killed on Seattle streets this month.

Westlake (4th and Pine) ~6:30pm, ride ~7:00pm, WSB ~7:30pm, Maridee ghost bike ~8:30pm, Cristian ghost bike ~10:00pm.

Get loud. Get angry. Force change. 💔
Howdy Critical Mass friends. Given the ride length and complexity of going to two ghost bike vigils at different sides of the city this month, we have a route and plan for the first part of the ride. We are going to Fauntleroy first to give us a more concrete/predictable arrival time for the West Seattle and Vashon folks that wish to participate without going to Westlake. This will also mean we have a hopefully solid and very large mass heading back to Seattle from Fauntleroy. So don't worry about that. The summary plan for timing purposes is: • Meet at Westlake @ ~6:30pm (as usual) • Depart Westlake @ ~7:00pm (hopefully on time-ish!) • Pass by West Seattle Bridge Complex @ ~7:30pm • Vigil at Maridee Bonadea Ghost Bike @ ~8:30pm • Vigil at Cristian Salyer Ghost Bike @ ~10:00pm The exact route is confidential. The total distance for the above is about 22 miles, but only ~890 ft of elevation gain, so relatively flat for Seattle standards. Hope to see you all there. Please feel encouraged to bring flowers, candles, notes, signs, white painted bike parts, etc., and BE LOUD and UNAPOLOGETIC. Bring your friends. Share this information. The fact that we even have this "logistical" problem for a Critical Mass ride is crazy and should not happen. Love you all! This ride was a memorial ride for two cyclists killed on Seattle streets this month. The video is taken at the vigil for Maridee Bonadea, who was killed because a box truck driver was too impatient to wait for her to safely get around parked cars on a street that shouldn’t have parking at all.

I went by the scene on Wildwood and happened upon the friends and family of the cyclist just after they had installed a ghost bike this afternoon. She was Maridee Bonadea, a 76-year-old well-loved and wonderful lady from Vashon Island. This did not have to happen and was entirely preventable.

Looks like someone is trying to remove Maridee's Ghost Bike
We live near the spot where a cyclist was recently run over and killed on SW Wildwood. We just witnessed a man in a truck cutting the chain off of the ghost bike placed in memory of Maridee Bonadea. When we confronted him to ask what he was doing he nervously mumbled something about removing the chain from public infrastructure. When we asked if he was there as part of that infrastructure he said he was “the neighborhood.” We’ve lived a half block away for 15 years and have no idea who this was or why he was speaking on behalf of “the neighborhood.” He left in a hurry without taking the bike. I’m currently babysitting the ghost bike until my husband comes back with a new chain and lock. Can/should anything else be done?
