bookdown the package is still alive and working great! It's the bookdown dot org hosting service that's getting shut down, but you can still host rendered bookdown html sites wherever else you want

I'm sure Bookdown is very nice and very useful for its purposes, but if you've been using proper LaTeX since the 1990s, it's like going from an organ to a kazoo.

With bookdown.org being decommissioned, I've been working on converting #rstats books from #bookdown to #quartopub. After spending a lot of time with Claude to get it right for my two books, here's a repo that might help you do the same (especially with Claude Code):

Ditto. But unless one has a strong reason to use bookdown, now is a great time to switch to a quarto-based workflow. As much as I liked bookdown, I have to admit quarto books are nicer.

Only waiting for the print proof, but if it looks good, I'll publish the third edition of Interpretable Machine Learning next week.
As always, it was more work than anticipated—especially moving the entire book project from Bookdown to Quarto, which took a bit of effort.

Wd love a short list of advantages for those like me who are (1) R-centric (i.e. don't need Quarto's polyglot advantage); (2) not using extensions such as bookdown etc..There are some nice formatting bits (callouts etc.), but my adoption has been spotty so far (see also bsky.app/profile/edde... )
It's one of my beefs with quarto. As pretty as the results look, the footprint of additional files and directories is too much for my simple(r) uses. (And the 'compilation' could be quicker too.)
