Two snake species inhabit the island: the Golden Lancehead (Bothrops insularis) and the Neotropical Snail-eater (Dipsas mikanii).

The Golden Lancehead evolved differently from its mainland relative, the common Jararaca (Bothrops jararaca). The island lancehead is arboreal.

There are many curious facts about Snake Island, but the most notable is its endemic species: the Golden Lancehead (Bothrops insularis).
October 9, 2026 at 1:50 PM
The species Bothrops insularis originated from geographic isolation during the Earth's ice age 10,000 years ago. When melting waters began to submerge the land, many islands were formed. Most animals fled to the mainland, but some snakes remained trapped.

The reason they live in trees is their primary food source: migratory birds. The Golden Lancehead is smaller and lighter than Bothrops jararaca, measuring between 0.5 and 1 meter on average, though it can reach up to 2 meters. Its coloration is also distinct: a uniform ochre to light brown.

Boipeva (Xenodon merremii): Some feature colorations similar to the jararaca (Bothrops jararaca). However, this species' most specific mimicry tactic is flattening its body dorsoventrally to appear larger before launching defensive strikes at predators.
