Darwin wrote in 1859 about defining what a species is: “No one definition has as yet satisfied all naturalists; yet every naturalist knows vaguely what he means when he speaks of a species." Gendered language aside, it seems like that's still true!

I

‘m given the directive:
catalogue all natural species,
& set to work immediately,
using best available methods,
acquiring existing organizations,
establishing new ones,
creating a network of naturalists,
devoted to documentation,
but in the end the most efficient way
was to eliminate 99% of you.

Great diagonal cross-section. Bracken, ground cedar/club moss, lichen, pipsissewa. I love it. I have printed and framed it. Just a little patch of scrubby cutover bush in the West Kootenays..... #moss #naturalists

2PM on the Baron Tikitrocious' Midday Matinee! A team cataloging wildlife on a deserted island in the Venetian Lagoon find their boat sunk. When the feral cat colony exhibits aggressive behavior, the naturalists fight for their lives in 2014's “Black Cats, Black Death.”

“We were surprised to discover that the gathering was… a ritualistic devouring of 34 captured Imperial stormtroopers, who were spit-roasted alive in their armor for seli beli (“to seal in the flavor”) and tanga tiru (“divine tang of mortal fear”), a delicacy to the Ewok palate.”

If naturalism is to mean anything at all it means that if they ever find this, all us naturalists give up, admit defeat and have a picnic about it

Consider that to this day, people fishing outside the museum find things in the aetherochemical spills that, disgustingly enough strongly resemble bits of us Lalafell, to the point where multiple naturalists studying them resigned and vanished from the public eye. Perhaps traces of what escaped...

Great little piece from CBC British Columbia on bat boxes and our TERM project! It features an interview with one of the lower mainland's naturalists, John Saremba with the Burke Mountain Naturalists. Great job!

disconnect between the green tech industry and men involved in it and capitalism and environmentalism that's about caring and protecting the natural world. It's also science vs industry in many ways, or scientists/naturalists vs engineers/technologists. This is how you get Abundance bullshit too.

Pondering the big questions:

Is it the SAME silverfish I rescue from my bathtub every day, or are they taking turns? And how long, if it is the same one, before it realises that the piece of paper is a magic carpet, not a predator?

Yes, Bächli et al. (2004) seems to be the top ID reference (listed by Barnard, 2011), but as you say, “a hefty investment”! So many taxonomic monographs essential for accurate morphological identification are sadly beyond the budget of most naturalists, especially younger folk, which is really sad.

Great pleasure to talk to the Abingdon Naturalists' Soc tonight about what we've learned in 80 yrs of studying Great Tits at Wytham. Such an enthusiastic & interested audience, some had connections to almost the start of the study. A privilege to work with what David Lack & Chris Perrins founded.
