Kinda gross but also fascinating. Braconid wasps lay their eggs inside caterpillars, which then eat their host. 🌱🐛
Super beneficial if you have a tomato hornworm problem.
Plant tomatoes next to yellow spotted bee balm or boneset to attract braconids (1/2)

There's a group of braconid wasps, the Alysiinae, that attack maggots, develop inside the hardened puparia, and have to force their way out.
So their mandibles open away from the head to push rather than crush, the teeth appearing to face the wrong direction.

Quite pleased with this shot of an Urosigalphus braconid wasp I got in central Austin today. I suspect the wasps are emerging from live oak acorns, having parasitized the grubs acorn weevils.
Not many live photos exist of this genus, it seems.

The two writers carried out research into insects and took inspiration from braconid wasps, which lay their eggs inside caterpillars. And, slowly, the idea developed into the facehugger.

I remember reading about Agriotypus wasps in Donald LJ Quicke's book "The Braconid and Ichneumonid Parasitoid Wasps" (p 385-387) and thought these caddisfly parasitoids are some of the most amazing wasps alive.

Most people don't think of wasps being aquatic, but there are definitely some that exist, such as Agriotypus sp. They are parasitoids of Trichoptera pupae and pre-pupae. #Agriotypus #Ichneumonidae
