Ichneumon wasp shot on my phone 🤳 Anyone seen any ichneumons, braconids, or chalcidoids lately?

If it was they would have a bad time vs the Bold Braconids, the Warring Warblers, the Wrong Type of Leafs, etc

That said, there are real differences between ichneumonids and braconids which are obvious to anyone used to them. Just makes it hard for beginners.

As everyone of course knows, ichneumonids and braconids are entirely different families, with the difference clearly visible from e.g. these photos.

(Yes, I'm being a bit sarcastic, two groups who are more distantly related than humans and whales have no right looking so similar.)

Just been struck once again by a really noticeable difference between the wasps from Ugandan forest traps and non-forest traps.

Farmland: braconids instead of ichneumonids
Forest: ichneumonids instead of braconids

Another similarity to humans then, alas. If I want someone to help me with the wasps, it's no use my saying "can you pick out the braconids from these samples, you know, the ones with the hindwing vein RS merging with..."

Lot of background needs to be taught first.

Probably quite a few new species there (understatement). Our knowledge of African small braconids can basically be summarised as ≈ 0. That may change soon..

I've marked this sample as only having tracker wasps (ichneumonids). I dunno, those look like braconids and even a few other wasps too?! Cue for 30 minutes digging through the database.🧪

And it's only a handful of wasps too, since it came from the Ugandan river trap which most wasps couldn't reach.

In that most logical of places, my bedroom. Where else would I find about 50 jars ≈ 5000 African wasps...

(OK so there are some boxes of wasps in temporary storage there. This lot were hidden underneath a cardboard box of braconids.)

Jossain tuolla on ahmaspistiäispurkki vainopistiäisten seassa.

There's a tracker wasp / ichneumonid jar there somewhere, among the braconids.

I just sorted the first Ugandan sample I collected, from trap R93T1! (mus.utu.fi/ZMUT.R93T1-1...)

Five ichneumonid wasps and three braconids. Including a Rhyssinae.. which I thought I'd already sorted out and published 🤔

If they are braconids then @jasboparai.bsky.social might know something about them

I would not be surprised if ichneumonids and braconids are like this too

Leiophron apicalis.

Ooh, look at me keying out Braconids like I'm a real Hymenopterist ;-)

we bred special organic braconids with baleen whales so we have aquatic parasitoids to organically deal with the sea aphids. and then we gave the algae farmers little aphid tasers because we never said anything about cruelty free.

he's going on a rant about how nobody cares about ichneumons or braconids because "they're all the same, SO TAKE PHOTOS, SO WE CAN TELL THEM APART, I'M GOING TO GO INSANE, I'M NOT GOOD WITH TEXT DESCRIPTIONS. so it's got a wrinkly pronotum? how wrinkly. wrinkly in one spot?"

Meaning of #bracon BRACON: Genus of pregivers hymenopterous insect constituting the type of family of the braconids... bracon
January 12, 2025 at 1:28 AM
I should add that I haven't necessarily identified every single one to species, just that I'm confident that every one I've added to the list is a distinct species. There are close to a dozen braconids that I'll likely never even get to genus, but they ARE all different!

Some alysiine braconids have been lekking in the back garden. These are parasites of flies, and given how many I'm seeing, I suspect they've been feeding on maggots in my compost.
April 18, 2026 at 9:42 PM
NA ichneumonids at least not actually the worst surprisingly? A lot of them fairly distinctive visually.... that being said prolly some cryptic species bullshit going on and also like. All the other parasitoids. Good luck getting all 1000000 identical braconids to species level lol

This tiny likely #braconidae is one of the more beautiful visitors I spotted today. Without a pit stop at flowers like this groundsel, these little braconids would not have the fuel to go on and parasitize the critters we do not want hanging around.

@graemelyons.bsky.social are any of these Chalcids any good for you? Not got any decent Braconids, but have a few Ichneumons if that's any use.
