Here’s an interesting article about a Black violinist who inspired Beethoven. www.nytimes.com/2020/09/04/a...
The Black Violinist Who Inspired Beethoven (Published 2020)
George Bridgetower, the original dedicatee of the “Kreutzer” Sonata, was a charismatic prodigy but faded into history.

#ClassicalMusic Violinist Ilya Kaler & pianist Rasa Vitkauskaite release 'Bridgetower Project,' a new album reclaiming the legacy of Afro-European virtuoso George Bridgetower, original dedicatee of Beethoven’s 9th Sonata. What do you think of this historical tribute? #History #NewMusic

I hope you get visited by the ghosts of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, the Chevalier St Georges, George Bridgetower and Florence Price just so they can point and laugh.

Chris’s support was crucial for me as a young reporter. His empathy was a gift during difficult times. He was a good man. He will be missed, and my deepest condolences go to his family and all who loved him. www.thebaltimorebanner.com/obituaries/c...

Beethoven dedicated a violin sonata to him. He was a sensation across Europe. But people who like to think that Black Britons are new development are ignorant of his genius. Meet George Bridgetower. www.trinhall.cam.ac.uk/about/people...

Retracting the dedication to Bridgetower was a mistake! Kreutzer didn't even like the damn thing!

Still regretting the decision to retract the dedication of my Violin Sonata No. 9 to George Bridgetower.
One can only imagine just how many times Copeland encountered such anti-Black racism

Broadly speaking, Classical Music is deeply invested in myths of white racial homogeneity despite historical evidence that dark-skinned people of African descent have contributed to it since the 14th c. (at least)
“The decision was made to exclude me from the filmed production of Swan Lake because I was told my brown skin would disrupt the aesthetic.” ~ Misty Copeland

When folks gripe about DEI, remind them who benefited from shutting out dancers like Copeland. That pattern runs through our whole history.

African-British violinist George Bridgetower, like many Black artists, is often erased from the narrative. GB inspired Ludwig von Beethoven’s Bridgetower Sonata for #violin & #piano (renamed Kreutzer Sonata because Beethoven fell out with Bridgetower) 🎻 🖤

George Bridgetower, Bardic College of Creation. His violins virtuosisms went so hard, object started to dance (some still haven't stopped). he's the hardest working bard in the land, so much he has a personal luthier following him around, because he keeps breaking strings.

You know the story about Bridgetower, for whom it was composed? (Kreutzer never played it...)

And Ludwig van Beethoven of course knew and work with George Polgreen Bridgetower, so even he didn't live and compose is a homogenously white European cultural context

Let's just rename it the Bridgetower Sonata, already. I wrote it for him.
The premiere of Beethoven's “Kreutzer Sonata” took place on this day, 222 years ago in Vienna, Austria, with Beethoven at the piano and violinist George Bridgetower.

It’s Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 9, Op. 47 — better known as the Kreutzer. It was originally written for and premiered with George Bridgetower in 1803, before Beethoven later changed the dedication to Rodolphe Kreutzer.
