Briticisms!

In Ben Yagoda’s wonderful book about Briticisms, GOBSMACKED, I just found my new favorite word: “shitgibbin.” (Also? I call dibs on the title.)

And pear-shaped, to cite one of my favorite Briticisms I'm surprised we of the U S of A have never imported.

Also I know Briticisms have leaked into American English ("jab" during covid) but "full stop" rather than "period" made my eyebrow raise a bit

I think a lot of Briticisms sound silly, but they really nailed it with "torch" instead of "flashlight."

"OOOOOOOOOOOOOO England? I LOVE England! [Briticisms] the peas are so awesome, and oh, the English breakfast, and SpOt Of TeA?"

I finished the demo but Hask has fallen in love with Saelim without any prompting
I also think it is VERY funny that they've clearly included Briticisms for the UK version like he announced he "fancies" Saelim

Some incredible quotes in here too. A real banger of a piece.

It is actually almost distracting how many Briticisms they have injected into the UK version of this game like why are they saying bobs your uncle

I have a British ex and I'm immune to a lot of Briticisms but this is a brand new one for me

I think one of my favourite Briticisms is "prang"
Fuck ups, a list. Start as we mean to go on 🤣

1. Our mate boked us on a transfer, bot to the chalet but to a town nearish. He managed to save the day by coming to pick us up for the last leg.

2. He wanted to go do a big shop. Bad news: the shops are shut on Sunday evening.

Scrabble says it's not a word.

I say they're a lot of dirty wankers.

Not sure how to hashtag this #briticisms #hyuckHyuck

What I want to know is why alien foreign Briticisms are creeping into our All-American English. For example... why is an injection now a "jab" when it always used to be a "shot?"

Two Briticisms I like are "dodgy" and "fancy"

Also learned a "jazz" magazine is not necessarily about jazz music.

i think the british people are better than their monarchy, abolish it

So I'm listening to the BBC learning English podcast (to learn quirky Briticisms) and January 27ths episode is about Shipping, in the romantic fiction sense. -_-;

"Pub-crawl" and similar phrases ("bar-crawl") were mostly Briticisms until roughly the 1980s, when they caught on in the U.S. Ben Yagoda has more notoneoffbritishisms.com/2025/01/06/p...

Back to H.L. Mencken and his book The American Language, he says in Supplement One (1945) that one of the Britishisms “that deserve American adoption” is “‘pub-crawl’ …

Oh I have little doubt the King will have a few choice Briticisms. They are the masters of the subtle insult, after all, the kind where the target doesn't get it and just smiles and nods.

I hadn't know it was out this week!! I do want to play F at some point but all the briticisms I've seen are so funny, need to play asap

(empty spaces right before this one sets up the song)

will some woman in this desert land
make me feel like a real man?
take this rock n roll refugee
ooh babe set me free

"run like hell" is full of briticisms which are pretty cool.

It's an obsession, and I don't think Calvin Klein caused it.

(You didn't have that ad over your side of the Pond, did you?)

Anyway maybe he or somebody in his camp are confused because I use some Briticisms by habit these days?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've been watching a lot of 1990s TV from the UK and have decided to start making up my own faux Briticisms:

"You can't just show up looking all Tommy Buttons."

= Whatever you are planning on doing, don't do it because you will look like you are desperate and trying too hard.

Not quite yet;) Taking me awhile because work/family. 🤬
The Briticisms where there should be Americanisms and anachronisms in B’s POV (spirits, sweets, etc). And vice versa for the European sections. Pedantic, but as a Yank who lives in the UK who had a dad born before Bucky, they irritate me.
