#brochs
🧵This thread is from when we took our Kentucky friend to see a pair of iron age brochs in Glenelg right after visiting Eilean Donan Castle. Brochs can only be found in Scotland!

Ser litt på Nanna Brochs boligundersøkelser i Oslos arbeiderstrøk i tjueårene. Ekstrem trangboddhet. Her er et eksempel på en familie på tre som bor i bakrommet til en butikk. Elsker at de har prioritert piano ❤️

Excellent news about an idea dreamed up by the folk who sell this fab 'Scottish brochs' t-shirt (can YOU name all these brochs? 🤔)

The remains of Dun Carloway Broch on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. It was probably built in around 200 BC, and still stands at some 9 meters in height. 📸 My own. #Prehistory #Brochs #Archaeology #Lewis #DunCarloway

Old photo: one of the two partially-ruined Iron Age Brochs, at Glenelg on Scotland's west coast.
These are are marvels of sophisticated construction, some 2,000 years old...

Brochs seem to be unique to iron-age Scotland and are most commonly found in the northwest Highlands. Lowland brochs, such as this one, are relatively rare (but that could be because few survive here rather than few were built).

Gestern die letzte kleine Wanderung zum Broch Dun Fiadhairt. Brochs sind Rundhäuser von (wohlhabenden) Landeignern, maßgeblich aus der Zeit 200 v. bis 200 n. Ch..
Wunderschön.

You can’t do a coastal survey in Shetland without encountering brochs. These epic monuments of the Iron Age never fail to impress and interest us. What's your favourite Shetland broch?

Ok - time to have a thread on the Brochs of Shetland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and these are some of the finest you'll find anywhere
In fact - probably some of the best surviving pre-Roman structures anywhere in Britain but thats a bold claim

The Tappoch Broch is one of the best-perserved lowland brochs, as well as being one of the easiest to access.

I'm a bit obsessed with brochs and I also love Jools' papery things.
Make your own Broch! Did you know that Brochs were drystone windowless towers built during the Iron Age in Scotland? No one really knows what the roof was like or if there even was one. (That's my time travelling wish - to see what a broch was really like and how it was used.)

Skara Brae and brochs, here I come!

Old photo: the two ruined brochs in Glen Beag, Wester Ross, are marvels of construction. Built from un-mortared dry stone they're double-walled, with internal staircases - quite sophisticated buildings, yet at least 2,000 years old.
Our ancestors knew what they were doing!

I have joked that if I was able to teach my own specialist class on my research focus I might well call it Lochs & Brochs.
So I used to like to joke I taught from Plato to NATO

But really I taught from, say, Gilgamesh to Luther.

But they don't rhyme. I want them to rhyme.

Does that make Brochs walnut whips? And hypocausts made of liquorice allsorts?

I got into #archaeology because of things like #brochs. Now I rarely look at such things. Caught up with one today, though.

The Caithness #Broch Project plans to build a replica Iron Age tower near Latheron, having secured planning permission(Image: Caithness Broch Project).

The origins of brochs, some of the most enigmatic and sophisticated structures of #prehistoric #Scotland, date back to between 400 BC and 100 AD

Surely, the question is, why don't we have brochs in Sussex? @romanpalace.bsky.social

Wow! Over £10K has been raised in less than two days to help buy the broch site. Keep it going, folks, this is magnificent support! 👍 #brochs
