A Victorian man is fined following the discovery of hundreds of frozen and taxidermied animals at his property in Victoria.

A 74-year-old man from Kynetown, located 86 miles northwest of Melbourne, has been fined $10,000 after authorities discovered a large collection of frozen, stuffed, and live native animals at his residence. Glenn Richard Rollo, 74, was found to have stored hundreds of dead animals across 14 freezers, including 78 emus, 26 echidnas, and 42 brushtail possums. The collection also featured threatened species such as barking owls, diamond pythons, and Murray River short-necked turtles. Additionally, over 700 dead native birds were found during a four-day search of his property. Rollo was charged with multiple wildlife, pest, and animal welfare violations, including illegally possessing and selling wildlife, taking wildlife without authorization, and failing to meet animal welfare standards. He was also found in possession of 15 live reptiles, including native snakes and turtles, as well as prohibited species like red-eared slider turtles and corn snakes, which he did not have a licence for. Conservation Regulator director Cal Heppell stated that the case highlights the importance of Victoria's strong wildlife protections, emphasizing that laws and permit systems are crucial for safeguarding biodiversity. Rollo pleaded guilty to all 13 charges at Kynetown Magistrates Court, with Magistrate Patrick Southey noting the baffling nature of the case given Rollo's apparent knowledge and love of wildlife. The fine was reduced from $15,000 to $10,000 due to his guilty pleas. Authorities stressed that the collection posed significant risks to Victoria's environment and biodiversity, underscoring the need for strict adherence to animal welfare regulations.
