#BrushTurkey Arvo tea with darling colleague from MH and her partner. They havex 17 brush turkeys on their block among frogs and other koalas inner Briz. One brush turkey brought her baby to see them by knocking on their door. Only psych nurses.

In May 2026, I was lucky enough to travel to #Australia en route to a research trip. Found a little time for some #birdphotography.

I used my penultimate day to pay an early morning visit to Sydney Olympic Park for a couple of potential additional lifers. The lone Red-necked Avocet was amongst the Pied Stilts, though spent 99% of the time asleep; I also picked up Mangrove Gerygone and Aus Hobby #wildoz #Australianbirds #birds
Distant and asleep - the Red-necked Avocet only briefly once stuck it's head out when it was harassed by a Silver Gull. Otherwise good numbers of Barwits and Pied Stilts, and 13 Royal Spoonbills present on the marshes Mangrove Gerygone was my other target alongside the Avocet, and this bird showed well and sang along the edges of the mangroves. The mangroves at the Olympic Park seemed to be the only reliable site in the Greater Sydney area, as far as I could ascertain Australian Brushturkey - nice and common and I observed several building their giant nest mounds.

And on the way back, I found he had company! He's watching closely while a potential partner checks out the interior of the mound, kicking soil into his face. He might want to back off a bit. He tries it on, but she's having none of it. #Birds 🪶 #BrushTurkey

Busy day at the #BrushTurkey mound. The male Brush Turkey has attracted a mate! An egg will soon be laid and buried in the mound to incubate for seven weeks. #birds 🪶
Female Brush Turkey at nesting mound. She is altogether less colourful than the male. She approved of the structure and will lay an egg in a hole in the mound some time in the next couple of days. Male and female Brush Turkey at the nesting mound. Male has a red head and yellow wattles.

But they’re not actual turkeys.... they’re megapodes (big-foot birds).

Males build giant compost mounds up to 4 metres wide and use the heat from rotting leaves to incubate the eggs. No sitting required.

Always mind boggling when such birds, ones that look so likely to be incapable of flight manage to roost at night high, high up in a tree. Similar with our Australian Brushturkey.
