Wombats are pretty big animals - almost a metre long - but Tasmanian buttongrass tussocks make them look tiny.

Kent Cobnut is a great name for a character :)

Into my Dickensian pastoral fiction he goes, along with Buttongrass Tussocks

Yesterday, the Difficult Birds crew tromped about 20km, lugging around rucksacks full of equipment for spying on orange-bellied parrots 🦜

We were limping our way home when this happened 🌈

We stood there gawping til it faded, then more or less skipped the rest of the way back to camp ⛺️

Buttongrass exists in many of the national parks of Tasmania.

In February, bushfires raged over Tasmania's north western region.
Here, destroyed by those fires, one of Tasmania's Gondwanan remnants, a Fagus (or Nothofagus gunnii). In contrast, the Buttongrass in the foreground shows nearly 200mm of regrowth in 4 weeks.

Hearing that the Overland Track, Cradle Mt, Tasmania re-opened yesterday. Surprises me, given that over 4 km of track-side veg burnt (and quite a bit of track structure, very likely). Was mostly buttongrass plain though:

Losing a lot of buttongrass plains in these fires, that will lead to higher erosion in these alpine areas. There’s also some great Beech forests that would also be threatened.

Thanks Shaun. The buttongrass, tea tree, eucalypts and sundry heath recover (the button grass in the fg is six inches in four weeks growth). The ancient species - Nothofagus gunnii (Fagus) and Athrotaxis cupressoides (Pencil Pine) are gone forever. 😕 Nij.

Some of the oldest forests with plants like buttongrass’ that are found nowhere else in the world, the very first Huon pine to exist and still lives! And as yet others yet to be ‘discovered’ - scientifically described and named.

There's a lot more at stake here than just a bit of buttongrass plain (a long-interval fire adapted system).
February 13, 2025 at 6:15 AM
Like this; Tuesday. I suspect it's way harder than you'd think.

BTW, buttongrass, pictured, is a fire-adapted system (unlike others in the vicinity). The 'grass' (it's a sedge) grows in tall tussocks, which fire burns around and under, so guessing is very hard to put out. The tussocks resprout.

My heart is still in Cradle Mountain Tasmania ❤️

Wombats, button grass, alpine lakes and waterfalls, what more could a person ask for??

Confidence and competence usually move together, until they don't. What a Wilsons Prom hike showed about verification versus assumption.
