The oldest private soldier deployed to NI would have been born c1949, and the youngest at withdrawal c1980. A young black man born in the 1950s, 60s or 70s in the UK, and joining THE BRITISH ARMY at that time would be fortunate indeed for his first experience of overt racism to be as an adult.

I'm not teaching this semester, so I'm volunteering at the Sidney Nolan Trust in Presteigne, on the Welsh/Eng border. Nolan, a modern Australian artist, lived there from 1983 until his death in 1992. Today I learned he met EM Forster at Benjamin Britten's Suffolk home in 1951!

Next: new jacket for 100 year old teddy bear. Had him restored and binned the manky doll's bed jacket he had been wearing since c1949. (Left the horrid modern felt paw pads on, will be mostly covered by the jacket)

Have fabric ready to go. Just need another decade of thinking time. Watch this space

Nitpick time: An anachronism w/ THE BRUTALIST.

Cranes didn't look like that in the 50s. Tower cranes were invented c1949 by Liebherr company in Germany, and they were not as sophisticated, especially the counterweights, until years later. See mid-50s photo below. www.liebherr.com/en-us/group/...

A fascinating little point in today’s article about English -language Jewish literature (at least in America, c1949) being a literature of anxiety. Anxiety about being Jewish and unable to escape it.

Not sure if I agree, but an interesting view.
