A lyrical vintage 1950s one of a kind handmade sterling silver blue topaz and opal surrealist modernist Face design brooch. No doubt a one of a kind entirely handmade creation by a talented designer/metalsmith! A single length of heavy gauge sterling silver wire has been shaped and hammered to create this unique design, then a large approx 5 carat watery blue topaz prong-set for one eye, and an approx 3 carat fiery natural opal cabochon prong-set for the other eye! One eye is a watery topaz, the other is a fiery opal! To the Surrealists, a disembodied face or floating head was a powerful visual tool used to expose the hidden inner workings of the human psyche. By detaching a face from its body, artists like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte rejected classical realism and logical anatomy to tap directly into the subconscious mind. Surrealism was heavily inspired by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis. A face severed from its physical body literalized a psychological split—separating the conscious, rational self from the untamed unconscious mind. Floating in a dreamscape, the disembodied head became a pure vessel for dreams, repressed desires, and hallucinations, entirely unburdened by social etiquette or physical gravity. Can be worn as a brooch, and with the addition of a pendant conversion bail on the pin stem at back it can be worn on a chain or cord also. I can include a cord at no extra charge if desired, just let me know when making the purchase. Measures 4.5" tall by 3-3/8" wide. Weighs a hefty 38 grams total. The blue topaz measures 15mm long by 8mm wide. The opal measures 10mm long by 7mm wide. Unmarked. Tested and guaranteed to be exactly as described. No doubt originally sold in an art gallery or fair with accompanying artist paperwork or labeling that has been lost over the years. In any case, it's a true statement piece of vintage surrealist modernist wearable art! Excellent vintage condition.

A one of a kind vintage 1970s 80s handmade sterling silver and turquoise surrealist modernist Homage to Magritte brooch by the famed Marcin Zaremski of Warsaw, Poland. No doubt inspired by the surrealist works of the great Belgian artist, René Magritte (see my last three photos), but given form and movement by the genius of the artist Zaremski! The bird looks out from the cage with a single eye made of a small turquoise bezel-set cabochon! Just over 2" tall by about 1.5" wide. Weighs about 20 grams total. Marked at back as shown with Zaremski's early marks including "MJZ" and his surreal 'eye' mark, as well as "925" for sterling silver. No national mark means that this was likely sold in his Warsaw shop to a traveler, not intended for export. The only example of this amazing design that I've seen across my decades in the business! Excellent vintage condition. René François Ghislain Magritte was born on November 21, 1898, in Lessines, Belgium. He studied intermittently between 1916 and 1918 at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Magritte first exhibited at the Centre d’Art in Brussels in 1920. After completing military service in 1921, he worked briefly as a designer in a wallpaper factory. In 1923 he participated with Lyonel Feininger, El Lissitzky, László Moholy-Nagy, and Belgian Paul Joostens in an exhibition at the Cercle Royal Artistique in Antwerp. In 1924 he collaborated with E. L. T. Mesens on the review Oesophage. In 1927 Magritte was given his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Le Centaure in Brussels. Later that year the artist left Brussels to establish himself in Le Perreux-sur-Marne, near Paris, where he frequented the Surrealist circle, which included Jean Arp, André Breton, Salvador Dalí, Paul Eluard, and Joan Miró. In 1928 Magritte took part in the Exposition surréaliste at the Galerie Goemans in Paris. He returned to Belgium in 1930, and three years later was given a solo show at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Magritte’s first solo exhibition in the United States took place at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York in 1936 and the first in England at the London Gallery in 1938. He was also represented in the 1936 Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Throughout the 1940s Magritte showed frequently at the Galerie Dietrich in Brussels. During the following two decades he executed various mural commissions in Belgium. From 1953 he exhibited frequently at the galleries of Alexander Iolas in New York, Paris, and Geneva. Magritte retrospectives were held in 1954 at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and in 1960 at the Museum for Contemporary Arts, Dallas, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. He visited the US and Israel in the years just before his death for museum exhibitions of his work. Magritte died on August 15, 1967.

Edward de Large Edward de Large moved into silversmithing and jewellery at the RCA (Royal College of Art - London) from 1972 after studying ceramics at Camberwell. His first use of titanium was as a coloured turned base for a gold bowl. He continued to use it while at the RCA but it was after graduation in 1975 that his real experimenting with the material began. His designs were inspired by the cloudscapes observed during a flight to Japan. He enjoyed the challenge of achieving his planned results with such a difficult material, so unlike the traditional metals used for jewellery. His work progressed by continuous experimentation. Pattern was carefully planned and designed using various masking techniques and both brush and dip anodising. As gold prices rose in the 1970s, jewellers began to look for alternatives to precious metals. Traditionally, they would have turned to base metals, such as bronze, iron and steel. Now, with the continuous search for the 'new', they sought out a wider repertoire of metals and also innovative techniques to create colour through patina. Silver was oxidised, aluminium anodised and painted. In the space industry experiments with new materials led to the development of metals such as titanium and niobium. Their iridescent colours, achieved through heat or electrical currents, soon attracted the attention of jewellery designers. De Large studied ceramics at the Camberwell School of Art and later silversmithing at the Royal College of Art, London, where he became interested in titanium. In 1975 he was awarded the Sandersons Art in Industry Award to travel in Japan, where he concentrated on the skills of metal inlay and patination. He went on to develop his own sophisticated and exacting method of anodizing titanium allowing him to achieve a remarkably complex and painterly effect. Variations of colour are created by varying the voltage and timing of the electrical current through the metal, while the sense of perspective is enhanced by polishing and sand-blasting. The fine detail he achieves is the reward of applying the current in a controlled way through the tip of a modified paintbrush. The brooch shows de Large's fascination with flight and perspective, and also the inspiration of the artist René Escher. De Large has cited the monolith in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film '2001: A Space Odyssey' as the inspiration for the shadowy rectangular form visible on the surface of the brooch.

a STRIKING vintage 1990s handmade art glass abstract post-modern geometric design multicolor paperweight sculpture by renowned Czech glass artist/designer Pavel Havelka (b.1969, Czech Republic). So much thought and experience and glass-making expertise go into each of his creations, and they are all fascinating and beautiful and true treasures of glass art! This paperweight is much more than just a utilitarian object in my estimation, and is really a small sculpture to grace your desk and your home! Overall the shape is of a pear cut in half with three layers of color. The outermost thin layer is black, then is a much wider layer of a smoky brown color which is almost invisible except from certain angles, and looks black in most of my photos, and at center is a bright lipstick-red section that looks carved out at center. Like all of Havelka's works this is a true piece of art and a joy forever! At bottom there is one more flat surface to provide a foot for the object to stand in place, and the artist has placed his hand-etched signature there, "Pavel Havelka", the piece is numbered "9/50", and it also still has the Princ glassworks sticker as well. There is no date given, but I am guesstimating the age to be about 20-25 years old. The paperweight measures 5.5" long by 4-7/8" wide and stands about 2.75" tall, and weighs about 2.5 pounds total prior to packing. As noted above and shown in my photos, the objects is hand-signed by the artist at the bottom. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers. a UNIQUE pair of vintage 1950s handmade enamel on copper geometric modernist design dangling screwback earrings made by Northwestern artist/sculptor/enamelist Harold Balazs of Spokane, Washington. A beautiful high-contrast design with an interesting variation in the design of each earring - one has blue lines, the other has white, and the order of the colored dots is reversed. (Please note: the 'yellow' dots are really chartreuse, and the 'green' dots are a shade darker, while the turquoise dots really are turquoise.) When Balazs was young in the early days of his career, he hand-crafted jewelry in copper with brightly colored simplified geometric designs that really stand out as unique and noteworthy compared to any other enamel jewelry designer of the period, in my opinion. His jewelry is entirely handmade, and thus one of a kind, although he did repeat some of his designs, but each is unique. Here's a short blurb about Balazs from Wikipedia... Harold Balazs (1928 – December 30, 2017) was an American sculptor and artist whose work has been featured in exhibits and public art installations throughout the Northwestern United States. He is known for creating large, abstract metal sculptures, but also created murals, jewelry, furniture, drawings, stained glass and wooden boats. This pair of earrings measure just under 2" tall by just over 1" widest point. Both are marked at back with stamped, "Balazs", and one earring still has the remnant of a paper label perhaps original but I can't say for sure. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers. a UNIQUE and wonderful vintage 1980s 90s handmade sterling silver and multicolored resin/plastic Surrealist Pop Art post-modernist brooch by studio metalsmith husband and wife duo, Bill Ruth and Susan Mahlstedt of the USA. A stunning one of a kind little piece of wearable art that is actually a piece of art that is also wearable. Composed of a sterling silver dimensional 'shadow-box' frame with riveted construction, and with inset 'artwork' in multicolored resin/plastic. There are applied sterling 'waves' at each side which are echoed by the resin/plastic yellow waves, and with a red background and what looks like a black ship with a small flag at top, and a green hand reaching down toward the ship. The hand of fate? Not sure, but this is very much of the same feel as much of the New York East Village art scene of the 1980s/90s period. Here's a short bio of R/M Studio that I found online: R/M Studio was started in 1985 by husband and wife team Bill Ruth and Susan Mahlstedt. For more than 22 years their collaborative work received many awards for creativity and skill, and was shown in galleries and fine art and craft shows throughout the country. After Bill passed away from cancer in 2006, Susan has continued to honor their partnership while expressing her own voice. Susan received a B.F.A. from the University of Kansas and a M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Both degrees are in jewelry and metalsmithing. Measures 2" by 1-7/8", and weighs 0.7 ounce or roughly 21 grams total. Marked at back as shown with the R/M maker mark, and "Sterling".
