A one of a kind vintage 1970s 80s handmade sterling silver and turquoise surrealist modernist Homage to Magritte brooch by the famed Marcin Zaremski of Warsaw, Poland. No doubt inspired by the surrealist works of the great Belgian artist, René Magritte (see my last three photos), but given form and movement by the genius of the artist Zaremski! The bird looks out from the cage with a single eye made of a small turquoise bezel-set cabochon! Just over 2" tall by about 1.5" wide. Weighs about 20 grams total. Marked at back as shown with Zaremski's early marks including "MJZ" and his surreal 'eye' mark, as well as "925" for sterling silver. No national mark means that this was likely sold in his Warsaw shop to a traveler, not intended for export. The only example of this amazing design that I've seen across my decades in the business! Excellent vintage condition. René François Ghislain Magritte was born on November 21, 1898, in Lessines, Belgium. He studied intermittently between 1916 and 1918 at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Magritte first exhibited at the Centre d’Art in Brussels in 1920. After completing military service in 1921, he worked briefly as a designer in a wallpaper factory. In 1923 he participated with Lyonel Feininger, El Lissitzky, László Moholy-Nagy, and Belgian Paul Joostens in an exhibition at the Cercle Royal Artistique in Antwerp. In 1924 he collaborated with E. L. T. Mesens on the review Oesophage. In 1927 Magritte was given his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Le Centaure in Brussels. Later that year the artist left Brussels to establish himself in Le Perreux-sur-Marne, near Paris, where he frequented the Surrealist circle, which included Jean Arp, André Breton, Salvador Dalí, Paul Eluard, and Joan Miró. In 1928 Magritte took part in the Exposition surréaliste at the Galerie Goemans in Paris. He returned to Belgium in 1930, and three years later was given a solo show at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Magritte’s first solo exhibition in the United States took place at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York in 1936 and the first in England at the London Gallery in 1938. He was also represented in the 1936 Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Throughout the 1940s Magritte showed frequently at the Galerie Dietrich in Brussels. During the following two decades he executed various mural commissions in Belgium. From 1953 he exhibited frequently at the galleries of Alexander Iolas in New York, Paris, and Geneva. Magritte retrospectives were held in 1954 at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and in 1960 at the Museum for Contemporary Arts, Dallas, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. He visited the US and Israel in the years just before his death for museum exhibitions of his work. Magritte died on August 15, 1967.

An enormous vintage 1980s handmade sterling silver minimalist post modernist brooch pin by Marcin Zaremski (1951-) of Warsaw Poland. This brooch is the definition of a 80s/90s statement brooch! I envision a woman in a long dark coat wearing just this one piece of jewelry, although it could just as well be worn by a man, or on a hat! Marcin Zaremski studied at the academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1969 to 1974 at the faculty of design. At the same time he was gaining knowledge of jewelry-making skills at his parent’s art studio. His parents, Jadwiga and Jerzy Zaremski, were the forerunners and the creators of the Polish modern jewelry art. Marcin Zaremski has taken part in over 100 art exhibitions (collective and individual) in Poland and abroad. From the times of democracy (1989) he has been managing his workshop in which he realises his jewelry projects and designs. This early work by Zaremski measures an incredible 5-5/8" long by 3/8" widest, and weighs 15.8 grams total. Marked at back as shown, "M. Zaremski", also his cypher "MJZ", and his 'eye' mark, also "925" for sterling silver.
