Joel Stein was a French artist of the 20th century. He studied at the National Higher School of Fine Arts and attended Fernand Leger's atelier in 1949, where he met the “Lettriste” group, the surrealist group and Francois Morellet. His works are characterized by research linked to geometric expression and mathematical systems. In 1960 he participated in the foundation of the “Groupe Motus”, of the “Centre de Recherche d'Art Visuel”, which would become the “Group de Recherche d'Art Visual” (GRAV). In 1961 the GRAV was presented for the second time, for which he made a film the following year. He also participated in several exhibitions at the Denise Renè Gallery in Paris and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His works are located in many Italian and foreign museums, galleries and collections.

Another poster from the fine series promoting Bobby's Department Stores. Bobby's were a well-known store chain that had branches in the 'favoured' and 'select' English south coast resorts of Margate, Cliftonville, Eastbourne, Bournemouth, Folkestone and Torquay - with outposts at Exeter, Southport and Leamington Spa. I feel Miss Marple would have shopped there! Bobby's were founded in Margate in 1887 and were bought by Debenhams in 1927. The name vanished in c1972. They produced some excellent advertising such as this poster - apparently one of a regular series - by the well-known graphic artist (and railway poster designer) Gregory Brown. This bold, colourful image of pollarded trees against a winter landscape, is very much poster art of the period. The illustration is dominated by a red frame and the two foremost trees - those in the background being in a muted pink. Amidst the snow a female figure with a child, carrying a red bag as a focal point, walk away from a background depicting a building and distant hills. The main poster is set against a black background with "Winter Sale" as a header, "Bobby & Co. Ltd." in the lower half and the town names in red below. These are Margate, Cliftonville, Eastbourne, Bournemouth, Folkestone, Exeter, Leamington, Southport and Torquay.
