Most affected lines cover alcoholic beverages, though some bulk shipments can still enter under a 50% Section 338 duty.

Effective Tuesday, the measure shuts out selected goods that previously entered under 50% tariffs, deepening the trade fight with Ottawa.

The change revises customs records for alcoholic beverages and motor vehicles, forcing importers and brokers to review classifications.

The new duties target products including wine and spirits, threatening higher costs before the fall buying season.

President Donald Trump’s threat of a 50% tariff on a wide range of Canadian goods will not take effect at 12:01 a.m. ET, he announced hours before, sparing roughly $20 billion worth of imports.

via NBC News Top Stories — The Trump administration is imposing 50 percent tariffs on a variety of Canadian goods after trade talks between the U.S. and Canada collapsed late Friday night. NBC News’ Yamiche Alcindor breaks down what this means for Americans’ wallets.

The United States has imposed a 50% tariff on certain Canadian goods following the collapse of recent trade negotiations between the two nations. The measures, which took effect just after midnight (2pm AEST), target products worth approximately $28 billion, including items like wooden ice hockey sticks that are now largely obsolete. While the tariffs represent over 5% of Canada's exports to the US, analysts suggest they are not a major economic shift given the scale of bilateral trade. The decision comes amid accusations from both sides that the other party undermined the talks, with no immediate agreement reached. The move highlights ongoing tensions in North American trade relations, though experts note the tariffs may have limited practical impact due to their relatively small proportion of total trade volumes. The dispute underscores broader challenges in maintaining economic cooperation between longstanding allies.

The White House said the new duty will take effect Aug. 19 after Canada’s provinces curbed sales of American wine, beer and spirits.
