Zoro's autistic traits - Candy in a Cave Fic link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/85867706 I used a lot of different autistic traits for Zoro, some he has canonically, some that can be extrapolated, and some that I thought just fit his character. The canon ones are in italics. If you guys want to know more about this, you can research autistic traits of course, but especially the notion of "monotropism" that, I think, fits extremely well with Zoro's functioning. I couldn't list everything because there's a lot in canon, and the fic is long, so feel free to add your own notes in the comments, I'm curious! List of traits that show in the fic Slow processing and difficulty to multitask It takes Zoro a full brain loop to understand he's gonna have to sleep with Sanji. He has a hard time focusing on thinking and facing a situation at the same time (Candy in the cave, opponents in general, needs time to process said situation). Sanji has noticed, so he tries to give him time to think about his answers. He double checks or gives precisions. (It happens outside the cave as well.) “I don’t need you to return my feelings.” Sanji looks up, surprised. “What?” He can’t help but smirk. He feels like he’s won something. Sanji was afraid of hurting him, but Zoro wasn’t. “Marimo, if you’ve decided to wait for me until I love you back, or some bullshit related to your unwavering devotion, let me tell you, it’s pointless.” Zoro doesn’t get what he’s talking about, so he stands frozen in front of his friend. Sanji lets out a heart-wrenching sigh and takes his hand to guide him into the room. The syrupy liquid in his gut does a little somersault; Zoro feels himself smile. The cook has them sit on the edge of the bed and keeps his hand clasped in Zoro’s. He bites his lip in search of a cigarette, tearing away the skin that covers the last bit of red. The gash fills with blood; Zoro cranks his neck to lick it. Sanji lets him, motionless. He doesn’t respond to the gesture, as if he were trying to convey something Zoro doesn’t understand. Finally, the cook speaks up again: “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have let you believe it with Candy… I told you it was just an act, I…” “What are you talking about?” Zoro cuts him off, thrilled to have tasted a little blood. Sanji tries to sit up straight, to stand tall so he can be proud of what he’s about to say, even though it seems like a problem, a flaw he’d been carrying around and would have preferred to get rid of.

Zoro gets it now: men didn’t want Sanji as a prince, so he only plays it for the ladies. Men didn’t let Sanji be who he was, so he tries to reconnect with those missed out parts like it’s not too late to indulge. Men reject what they think he is, so he jumps into the role and tramples them with it. Both the prince and the okama are an assertion. A way of shouting to the world, “I am not what you want to make of me. I am not what you want to reduce me to. I exist otherwise than in your eyes, and I will fight for this even if it kills me.”

Zoro decides to show what he means with his actions and kisses his bare shoulder before pressing himself against the cook’s back and wrapping his arms around him. He looks at him in the mirror, straight into his eyes. Their reflection seems strange to him, a reversal of who they are, but he finds that the two men covered in Luffy-red, facing him, look outrageously good together. “Me.” Sanji exhaled the word, returning his steady gaze through the glass. It’s as if their doubles are talking in a parallel dimension, but Zoro is convinced they’re saying the same thing, so he nods and kisses Sanji again, on the shoulder, along his neck. Then, the cook breaks the moment by turning around: “Are you fucking kidding me?!” Zoro had kind of expected this; he just steps back with a smirk. “What, ’that a problem for you? I can be asexual and still enjoy sex with you.” This time, Sanji grabs him by his necklace and pulls him close, his teeth clenched and looking furious. “Seriously, you couldn’t have said something sooner?! She eyes him up and down with a lustful gaze, bites her lip in an almost obscene manner, and extends her fingers toward the swordsman, who remains rooted to the spot. “I’m Candy. A pleasure…” Zoro eyes the back of the hand held out to him. The cook, the woman… Candy. Candy waves her fingers in front of his eyes, as if she’s expecting something from him. Not a handshake. “Putain de merde, marimo, you’re terrible at this.” He jumps at the deep voice coming from this person who is so androgynous, so feminine, so extreme—like an antithesis to the cook, his reflection in a distorting mirror, his obvious opposite, so fitting and so absurd at the same time. It snaps him out of his stupor, and Zoro retorts immediately, offended: “You said only you had to role-play! I don’t do that kind of shit! And I still have fifty questions and I don’t even know where to start!” Sanji snaps back, which reassures Zoro. “Then just act like you always do, or whatever! If you don’t wanna kiss my hand, don’t! And ask your damn questions! You have five more minutes before I jump you! And by the way, why aren’t you more affected by this… this connerie?! I’m already completely on edge!”

He’s going to see Candy, Sanji, and both of them deserve, demand, that he rise to the occasion. “Um… are you revamping your wardrobe?” the sniper asks hesitantly, taken aback. Zoro shakes his head. How can he sum up the situation without mentioning the kinky cave? What did the cook say earlier, before disappearing without a trace? “I… I have a date?” he tries, finding the term sounds false and ridiculous coming from him. “I think?” He’s not entirely sure, but it’s his best option. “You have a what?!” Usopp yells, his eyes popping out of his head. The cook took a risk by asking his question and voicing this evidence they don’t usually need to put into words. The swordsman has a duty to do the same. “Yeah. It was really good.” Sanji stays still, as if waiting to hear more. Zoro recalls his original question and wonders where that idea came from, but he can’t see why he would lie. “I don’t have any desire. I don’t know what it means to feel that way. But…” Sanji nods, then flinches when he hesitates. Zoro continues: “I’d like to, I think, yeah.” He’s admitted the truth because Sanji is the one who brought up the idea, because the cook opened the Pandora’s box that is the kinky cave, and because even though they love to argue, they agree more often than not. The cook nods, as if expecting his reply. He presses his lips together, highlighting the ridiculous little mustache Zoro can’t help but find charming ever since he realized how he feels about the blond idiot. “Okay.”

Zoro shrugs, trying to stick to their agreement, but he doesn’t know how to fool Usopp. “If you know what it is, you know where it grows,” Sanji retorts without missing a beat. Zoro follows him into the infirmary, with Usopp hot on their heels. Sanji sets his bag down there, along with the mushrooms spilling out of his pockets. “We brought some back for you, you know?” grumbles the swordsman, who hates being used to carry unnecessary things. Usopp stares at them one by one, surprised. Then he finally relaxes and says, with his hand behind his head and a smile on his face: “Oh! Wow, thanks, you didn’t have to!” Sanji smiles and dips his hands into the haramaki to hand him his share, but Usopp suddenly plants his front foot firmly on the ground and yells again: “Wait, why would I need this stuff?! Who do you think I am?! The local pervert?!” “No, that’s him,” Zoro blurts out reflexively, pointing at the cook before getting kicked in the thigh. “Did someone say pervert? Who’s calling me?!” Franky’s voice asks from who knows where. “No one!” all three of them yell in response.

Just then, Sanji returns and nearly chokes. Zoro turns his head. He smirks when he sees him with his hand under his nose, ready to stem a flow of blood. The cook holds back, however, and it is Candy’s lustful gaze that catches his eye as she reveals her lips, cleaned and freshly repainted. Zoro flashes her a confident smile. “I’m ready, princess.” Candy blushes, then bursts out laughing. She walks toward him with a languid gait, looks him up and down, and takes in the room with a glance. “So, anything I want?” He nods and bares his teeth. “I’m a man of my word.” Sanji has to hide to stifle a giggle, but Candy quickly regains her consistency. She grabs his wrist, forces him to gently pull his fingers out, and rips the glove off herself. Then she slips on another glove—probably because she doesn’t want to touch Zoro with lubricant-covered hands—grabs the bottle, and crouches down behind him.

Zoro senses the bartender moving, then sees him rush toward the apparition. “Mada…” He stops short when he sees Sanji’s face, improbably masculine. He has to look up to talk to him. “Si… Uh. Sorry.” The cook looks down at the man he’s talking to and slips a cigarette between his lips before changing his mind. He puts the pack away and lets out a sigh. Sanji studies the bartender from head to toe, for just a second. Then something shifts in his physique, his body language, even his gaze. With impossible fluidity, the virile man gives way to the virile woman, and Zoro recognizes the gestures Sanji used to perform his role in the cave. A hand with long, manicured nails, adorned with gold rings, rises in an affected gesture, while a leather handbag swings from the outstretched arm. A finger reaches out to lift the stunned bartender’s chin even higher, and a smooth, raspy voice coos: “For you, darling, that’ll be Miss Candy.” Zoro can’t believe his eyes when the bartender starts blushing furiously.
