We're watching the open web die piece by piece every day and it sucks.

I had missed the death of Casetext. It was a great free resource to access some of the information that should most be free: the law.

Casetext Shut Down: Here's What It Means—And Why Callidus Is Ready - Callidus Legal AI
The shuttering of Casetext has major implications for the attorneys that relied on it. Callidus Legal AI is here to fill the void.

I loved CaseText. So simple to use.

Westlaw acquired Casetext and with it, co-counsel. The product was built on OpenAI API calls with custom instructions. To my knowledge, it is not fully optimized with more specialized model training for legal questions or research.

RIP Casetext. You were useful.

So SCOTUSblog spent years and years removing PDF links to decisions and replacing them with Casetext links, and now that Casetext has been sold off every single one of those links is now dead?

CaseText was better than Westlaw Parallel Search though, it's a shame they shut it down.

Wait, casetext is gone? God damnit
June 3, 2025 at 1:52 PM
@aricohn.com You forgot to mention login speed and search speed. With CaseText, you could log in seconds and find a case quickly. With Westlaw, the login in process is about 3 hours and you are signed out for inactivity. Searches take forever. CaseText was so efficient.

Between Thomson Reuters ruining Casetext with AI bullshit, and this, can we just have one legal resource that doesn’t suck?
Law360 is requiring all stories pass through an AI "bias indicator" before publication.

The new policy came weeks after an executive from its parent company, LexisNexis, accused the newsroom of liberal bias in its Trump admin coverage. My latest for @niemanlab.org

Very cool tool from CaseText folks. Parallel Search will find same or very similar sentences in case law. And it’s free.

Reading Sherrill v. Knight for no particular reason rn.

What infuriates me is that by far the best use case was for implementing the capacity to do natural language searches, and everyone abandoned that. Casetext was doing a good job iterating on it, but Westlaw bought them and shifted purely over to genai.

I know westlaw is always about five minutes from destroying my preferred research tool, casetext, and every time I think about it my salivary glands fill with venom.

Sure seems to me like Thompson Reuters shut Casetext down to the outside world because Deep Research was too useful using it.

The best development in the legal field over the last 5 years was a legal research tool called Casetext which provided an affordable bare-bones legal research option to smaller firms and solo practitioners. It wasn't even in the market for 2 years before Lexis bought it and shut it down.

after a little speech detailing how trump targeted the court and family members and the constitution and has a history of being a shithead in general, ada requests unconditional discharge, a symbolic punishment of nothing.
