I work at CCCU so I can add a bit of detail. The huge majority of these additional students for us are not on-site, typical full-fee paying, they are 'partnership' students where the actual degree they study is franchised or validated from CCCU, but taught elsewhere.
'11 universities expanded by more than 11,000 students over the past decade, while the three institutions with the biggest growth expanded by more than 20,000 students – BPP University (28,915 more students), Canterbury Christ Church University (22,410) and UCL (21,490).' 3/3

The 'education gap' being a known thing in much of rural or semi-rural Britain, of course. True in Somerset, Dorset, Norfolk, Suffolk (hence UEA exisiting), mid-Wales (Aberystwyth), east Kent (hence University of Kent, CCCU), Cumbria/NW north of Manchester...

I don't want medieval history to die at CCCU, but I also want to live a healthy life.

Sorry, Will, for slightly hijacking the thread. 3/3

My institition. I'm angry and sad as how can we be a university without literature? Pleased to see the students have started a petition, though I fear it may be hopeless.

Also, I'm glad this decision is now news. Deeply disappointing from CCCU.
Hostile environment: Canterbury Christ Church University is set to axe English literature degrees from September 2025 as the degree is 'no longer viable in the current climate'.

The course will continue for students currently in their first or second year, the university says.

We always mark Theodore's feast at CCCU. Today, all at Morning Prayer were given a bottle of 'Holy Academia', last year's university ale named in honour of Theodore and Hadrian!
Today the Church of England remembers Theodore of Tarsus, second Archbishop of Canterbury, who had never set foot in these isles before being appointed, and who had to learn the local tongue on the journey here.

There would be no British Christianity without immigrants.

Gradually getting back into things. Today kicked off with a briefing at the House of Commons hosted by @lordrickettsp.bsky.social on the Bayeux Tapestry loan. A CCCU colleague and I were flying the Canterbury flag and catching up with plans involving the wider regision. 1/

Solidarity to our friends and colleagues at CCCU. Terrible news for Canterbury and the South East.

I just want to be clear about this. I am in solidarity with colleagues at CCCU who face course closures. What I am pointing to hear is journos writing blanket statements like ‘you can’t study English lit in the home of Chaucer’ & not fact checking. This puts applicants off. Puts parents off.
You can study English Literature in Canterbury @universityofkent.bsky.social & articles like this from @theguardian.com must be careful not to misrepresent the courses that are available in a city or area. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

There’s no need to pit Kent against CCCU in this regard. Our pool is different and we aren’t in competition with CCCU for English. I know this because I’ve read the market insight reports. It’s an awful situation.

I've had a right tussle with CCCU to get a group booking. I mean it's not like it was probably made in Canterbury or anything and has a close association with the history of our campus. Fortunately sense has prevailed, but I won't be going with 1/

This is awful demoralising news for our colleagues and friends down the road at CCCU.
It's also terrible news for Canterbury and the South East.
The update about Canterbury Christ Church was not fun to write: seeking to save £20 million, 80% of which they want to get by letting staff go, which would be 320FTE, or about *one in five*.

How on earth can an institution be ‘efficient’ with just 4/5th of its staff force?

I know how tough it is out there, but we do have a fully funded PhD scholarship available here at CCCU, with a UKRI-linked stipend and great staff to support you. If you want to pursue a PhD in History, Archaeology, or Heritage; consider applying. We're a friendly bunch and Canterbury is lovely. 🗃️
