brilliant news! 7th person cured of HIV via bone marrow transplant- previously we thought you needed to lose both copies of the CCR5 gene (HIV uses CCR5 to enter cells) and donors with that mutation v rare. This cure achieved with the less rare case of 1 functional copy of CCR5! 🧪

Charité Berlin researchers report HIV remission lasting over 6 years in a man who received a stem cell transplant from a donor with only one copy of the CCR5Δ32 mutation.

This suggests full CCR5 resistance is not essential for long-term HIV cure.

I've been teaching my students about the delta-32 CCR5 mutation since...2017? It's a really fascinating story about how some people are naturally immune to HIV because of how specifically it binds to & enters cells. It's great to see the "next steps" in developing this into a treatment possibility!

Curing HIV?
About 11 patients worldwide appear to have eliminated the virus after stem‑cell transplants from genetically resistant donors. This Substack explains the biology, CCR5‑Δ32, and why these cases prove possibility; but not a scalable cure.

Did you know that some people are resistant to HIV infection?
About 1% of individuals of northern European descent carry a homozygous CCR5-Δ32 mutation. CCR5 is a receptor on the surface of CD4+ T cells that helps regulate immune responses.
