This report introduces the 'CommBank-Melbourne Institute Innovation Index,' which reveals that innovation in Australia has stagnated since the pandemic. The report highlights that sectors such as wholesale trade, high-tech manufacturing, and professional, scientific, and technical services have shown the most innovation, with biotechnology emerging as the most innovative sector. Victoria currently leads New South Wales as the most innovative state. The report also suggests that industries integrated into global value chains tend to exhibit higher innovation levels, challenging the government's current industry policies. The Labor government's 'Future Made In Australia' initiatives, which focus on onshoring and protecting industries rather than integrating Australia further into global supply chains, may be contributing to the productivity slowdown. Additionally, the report indicates that firms in more competitive markets are more innovative, and Australia's highly concentrated economy, with increasing market concentration in recent years, may be stifling innovation and productivity. Bullock's comments also point to poor-quality management in Australian businesses as a critical issue. The article lists numerous examples of business failures and management issues, including private credit problems, ASX clearing and settlement failures, fund collapses, regulatory prosecutions, and cultural issues at major banks.
