#cercopidae
New day, new species [apparently]! 🥰 I photographed this #froghopper / #spittlebug ( #Hemiptera: #Cercopidae ) in Costa Rica this past August. An expert just mentioned that it's likely a new sp.: www.inaturalist.org/observations...

Even the most conspicuous of creatures can be undescribed!

Can't get over how clear/bubble-free this spittle mass is. You can easily see the spittlebug nymph inside. It's like a tiny fish (bug?) bowl! 🤩

P.S. - that fluid all came from its anus 😳

Cercopidae? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Another shot from Dr. Beynon's Bug Farm in Pembrokeshire. Spittlebug nymphs #Cercopidae hide in foamy sap bubbles as they feed. What looks like spit is a clever shelter for these tiny sap-suckers. Many people walk right by these!

Vc sabia @cesarfavacho.bsky.social ?

Today’s #BOTW / #BugoftheWeek is the aptly named Spittle Bug.

AKA Cercopidae and Froghoppers

At first I thought this was frog foam, but it turns out to be a bubbly nymph-fest!

Looks like a Froghopper belonging to the genus Cercopis www.inaturalist.org/taxa/61864-C... Not a cicada, but they are related.

I put google lens onto the photo and it suggests a Froghopper sp, family Cercopidae; and one stage further British Bugs suggests Planaphrodes bifasciata (f. tricinctus). Have a look!!

Haha, that's a great cartoon. They look similar, but leafhoppers are in the Cicadellidae family while spittlebugs are in a different family, Cercopidae.

Microscope photos I took of a teeny froghopper from the taxonomic family Cercopidae. Considered true bugs (Hemipterans), these guys are pretty much found anywhere around the world that has dense vegetation, like woodlands and grasslands

Thank you for looking. Siri clearly isn't a bug expert 😊. It seems it is a Froghopper sp, family Cercopidae, Planaphrodes bifasciata (f. tricinctus).
