My mom last week: "a WHOLE EPISODE on Cetology??"

My mom today: "I need three more episodes on Cetology"

(also see Rob's previous skeet in this thread, READING, it's the best)

We’ve run the numbers and seen all the data models. It’s not looking good.

it is remarkable how much cetology can be collapsed with the simple answer: because they are people and they are doing people thing
F off I'm wearing my kelp hat!

The cetology bit might be interesting as a stand-alone, but it’s an effective barrier to finishing the damn book.

cetology chapter of Moby Dick but instead of types of whales it’s Ishmael explaining different niche online dramas and discourses
August 30, 2023 at 1:25 AM
Yeh I'm halfway through the cetology chapter and lost track of the number of times I thought 'THAT can't be right' and it wasn't.

SETEC CETOLOGY
August 6, 2025 at 11:22 PM
An alternate perspective on the CETOLOGY chapter: it's my favorite part of the book. I think it's hilarious and awesome and a good character insight into Ishmael.

If you are a hater, by all means skip it. Not everything is for everyone. But if you're a first time reader, give CETOLOGY a chance! 🐋
Tomorrow is the divisive (and frankly tedious to some) CETOLOGY chapter and I want to emphasize that it's perfectly okay in this book club to skim a chapter if it's annoying or complain about the book. I'm not your professor. There are no grades! And if you like the chapter too, that's fine too! 🐋

I have reached the cetology chapter!!

Marine biology, but specifically Cetology!
September 3, 2026 at 6:34 PM
Ok the cetology chapter is GREAT and it actually helped me make sense of some marine biology & industrial whaling Events

yes I would love to elaborate. later this evening bc I got stuff to do
It's much funnier than I expected. People drag the chapter listing all the types of whales as dry and pointless, but it's delightful. Ishmael comes up with his own (perfect) name for dolphins because there are so many porpoises and "something must be done."
